Just had a boomer with 40 years of experience throw me, a 1 year vet in the industry, under the bus to our boss because I ‘took too long’ to do something so he couldn’t finish his work, even though I tried coordinating the handoff to him 2 hours before the end of the day.
Same guy who loudly listens to right wing talk radio (Glenn beck and Megyn Kelly of all people) from across my desk. The day after the kidnapping of Maduro I made some comment about being woken up to news of an invasion and the guy somehow got super defensive about it not being an invasion and US just taking a bad guy out.
Like, I’m always polite and personable but I just want to go mask off. I’m not going to throw people under the bus, and hell, if I did, I’d still get fucked. In a reasonable world my boss would be like, ‘dude you are a grown man complaining about the most junior person on the team’
But this will likely result in me getting fired for undermining the performance of the company. Fucking ridiculous man.
what a massive loser. i’m going on something like 20ish years relevant experience and i learned pretty early on never to officially single out anyone else for blame / always collectively accept blame (“we dropped the ball there”) on whatever deliverable to the bosses missed a deadline. and only ever drop a specific name to a higher up if it’s something safety or toxic-harassment related and to do that privately and verbally/offline.
if it’s any consolation, everybody with experience probably knows this guy is a blame-shifting loser. the only people who do shit like this are insecure and likely skirting the line of incompetent. so they do shit like this out of fear. the boss probably didn’t feel like getting into it with him face to face, because who wants to hear more bullshit? if i walked into a completely new team and one guy was pointing at a junior person and blaming them for a missed deadline, my read is that while that might be true… the accuser is the real problem. senior people are supposed to help junior people so the “team” can succeed.
Missed deadlines are never a junior’s fault. Is always either that the deadline was nonsense to begin with or someone lost something because there was a lapse in communication across multiple people. Anyone who has any amount of experience in a field should be able to recognize that.
Shifting blame is always part of the game in corpo world, but the most effective way to shift it is to flood the zone and not single anyone out because then it becomes an issue. Just offer a series of solutions and ask them to pick one. If you know the solution, but don’t want to make it look like you or anyone else messed up (assuming it was a mistake), offer 3 or 4 solutions with the only reasonable one being your solution. Middle management loves multiple choice and it lets them give options to other people making it look like they did due diligence.
I have a lot of control over workflow and procedure where I’m at and I’ve always found it to be really easy to take a lot of blame on myself and just say something like “we’re working on a better workflow for this currently, if there’s any other issues you want us to address while we’re at it please let me know”.
This also works if you did get singled out for something, just don’t play the blame game back and deflect with a flood of info.

He seems to be really knowledgeable and good at his job but now that I think about it, he’s always name dropping other people when any problem occurs. Shit, either this company is seemingly full of these types or that’s just the nature of kkrapital.
Absolute bums, man. I’m not the best at my job but I’m dedicated to establishing myself in this field and yet I’m always being looked at when anything bad happens, even on things I wasn’t even involved in. I’m the youngest and 2nd newest member in the department, no shit I fucking suck. I feel like I’m being kept around just to throw under the bus when shit hits the fan in a project.

ive met a few people like this, who, of course, learn how not to hit themselves in the dick after swinging a hammer for 30+ years… but otherwise completely ossify into a prickly asshole instead of learning to play well with others. they probably think it gives them job security to not help junior people along, but really it isolates them from collaboration and new ideas. also, it just sucks to suck.
this can absolutely bite them in the ass if there’s a major reshuffling and/or they get separated. people like that get real comfy in their fief and can fall apart if they have to join a new team/learn new shit, because they forgot how to not be a douche.
That guy has been in that position his entire life, has always asskissed the boss and alienated anyone and everyone who would befriend him, has always been treated as a problem by his fellow workers, someone who has never known genuine respect or dignity.
In other word’s he’s the ideal member of the working class according to the capitalists. If they had their way, every single person in every job would be exactly like this.
Reminded of the time a coworker of mine bragged about snitching on someone for sleeping in the bathroom. He wasn’t even in the same department as us.

My advice, don’t go mask off. Accept the blame and ask what you can do to make it not happen again. It is unlikely they will fire you for a one time offense, however if you blow up over it, you’re done. It’s not fair, but corporate America is built on sadism and masochism.
Afterwards, anything having to do with this team member, document, document, document. Record meetings, only talk through email, if they want to run something by you, tell them to drop it in your inbox. Always have a paper trail. Never talk on the phone without a third party. These things are extremely tricky, especially with senior employees. The best thing to do is cover your ass.
And you can never call them out or blame them by name. But if they come at you again, you’ll be ready.
This has happened in every job I had, including small business.

Yeah… as someone who quit a job over somebody not even being at the workplace for a year yet getting a promotion over me (who had been there for 5 years, and had going for said promotion for 3 years at that point), I can’t exactly blame the people who made the petition for that. Someone being fast tracked like that sucks to be around, and will poison the workplace with a lot of resentment.
Edit: I should also add that everyone “knew” said person was getting the promotion because the division or shift manager told the our shift division lead to take them off the line and “see if they can handle the job” a full 6 months before.
