It’s more like they spent all their money to acquire autopickaxes that were supposed to make the coal miners obsolete only to discover that the autopickaxes don’t work well enough. They’re going to have to get humans to keep working for them and they’re sitting on all this useless (and perishable - GPUs depreciate!) capex they can’t profit from. Paying in compute is a win-win (in that they win both times).
