I started mucking around with magic again, specifically old school (1997) playing Shandalar. I’m a total newbie so I always stick to green decks with ramp, and the Lainowar Elves is such a staple.

WE MUST RETVRN
Yeah old magic the artwork has that fantastic like mid-90’s fantasy metal aesthetic going for it. When you hit later additions and the rise of digital artwork, idk, it lost something.
One of the problems of digital is you’re always limited by the number of pixels technology can handle. So every artist, no matter how different, ends up drawing the same line. Real life doesn’t have that, so you can see where an artist’s hand wobbles or where they held their breath. Digital has gotten better, but still isn’t quite able to capture those minute differences. You end up with everyone’s technique looking the same.
That and WotC have gotten even worse about paying artists or providing them with reasonable deadlines.
Makes sense, I’ve only ever done art by hand never digital.

fuck your mana dork
This card was made just to snipe my beautiful elves.
“oh you play magic! what color decks do you like?”
“any color, so long as it’s green”
Welcome to da stompy zone
my inner timmy and johnny made their peace over a big pile of fungus and oozes
Oh man, this takes me back
He’s gonna take you back to the past
To play some magic cards that don’t suck ass
He’d rather have constant mana screwing and a force of nature in his hand and down it with beer
He’s the angriest gamer you’ve ever heard
He’s the angry cardgame nerd
There was a chapoeirista on r/cth who went by llanowar_shelves and that was impossible to forget.
The age of the Thrulls has begun

Also I love when magic was weird and fun. Set hate? Love that. Colour hate? Let’s do it. Horsemanship, ninjutsu, bring it all back
Isn’t there a card when it’s played you have to play a separate game of magic or somesuch? That’s wild.
edit: yes! https://scryfall.com/card/arn/10/shahrazad
Banned in every format for a good reason. The traditional Shahrazad bullshit was to win game one, then in game two use Timetwister, Fork, and Regrowth to create Shahrazad loops, causing the round to go to time, resulting in a draw. But since you won game one, you’d win the round. The card is definitely a flavor design win. It perfectly encapsulates 1,001 Arabian Nights.
Side note: EDH for a while thought Shahrazad was fine, found out “No, it absolutely is not” and had to ban the card. Deeply unserious format and I fucking hate it’s all anyone in my area wants to play.
somehow the funniest thing about that card is that it’s only 2 mana
They just brought back basically ninjutsu in the newest set. They called it “sneak” and the only real difference is it’s an alternate casting cost instead of an ability, so it doesn’t dodge counterspells and such.
