What is the Kuleshov effect ?

In film editing, showing the viewer two unrelated images can spark an emotional response. The classic example is having an actor with a neutral expression, then showing a bowl of soup, and the viewer thinks the actor is hungry. Then the same neutral expression and a woman… the actor is in love. It’s a way of using editing to manipulate your audience into thinking and feeling certain things.
