I’m seeing some people taking the threats posed by the Trump admin to make Canada the “51st state” both literally and seriously, to the extent they’re starting to game out the likelihood of some kind of military action.

Personally I don’t take the threat of outright American subversion/invasion/etc seriously yet because I don’t see the sort of coordinated propaganda effort I would expect from a country preparing for a military operation this controversial. Nor is there any real constituency of Americans I’m aware of with personal or material animus against Canada - right now I’m only aware of Trump mouthing off and Musk salivating over fake nerd maps.

Let’s say I’m wrong though and he really is dumb enough to go full boots on the ground North of the 49th parallleeeeelllllll - what happens? What will the hot zones be? Which premiers will be first on the kill list? and of course…What Will Quebec Do?

It definitely won’t come to pass, it’s obviously just unhinged bluster.

But also, I definitely think Trump COULD conquer and annex Canada if he really wanted to. And I’m skeptical that Canadians, being borgerlanders, would offer any real effective violent resistance.

I think the amount of violent resistance depends on how violent the takeover is. I’ve said it before, if the Americans manage to roll in “peacefully” then I can see a decent number of Canadians just accepting the new status quo and moving on.

But if they do what they always do and massacre civilians, bomb weddings, and subject people to all sorts of humiliation we have a good chance of seeing some kind of insurgency. And I think that’s the sticking point. People who say it’ll be a nothing burger and that Canadians will just accept it don’t think about the realities of foreign troops marching into their community and dictating their lives for the foreseeable future. I’m in the camp that any attempt at annexing Canada is going to be bloody.

We’re all definitely nervous about the whole situation, to be sure.

So far the only thing that gives me some reprieve is how many times Trump has waffled on tariffs: Introducing them, them walking that back, then re-introducing them, then increasing them, and the decreasing them back to what they were before, etc etc. If the motherfucker can’t even properly commit to a simple economic sabotage policy (requiring only the White House to issue a directive) then how could he commit to a full scale fucking annexation?

We do have people actively talking about developing nuclear weapons as a deterrent, and nobody seems to think it’s a bad idea. We have all the tech we need for it, we’d just need the political will and the directive (although we’re sort of in-between Prime Ministers right now and possibly calling an election imminently).

If it did come to pass, we’d probably have no choice but to invoke article 5 of NATO and then watch as nobody does anything to help us.
