  • Because they don’t have to. This quarterly report is good! Copilot use is up (because it was shoved into yet another app) and costs are down (because they layed even more people off). Businesses are locked in for the near future, so sales remain high.

It doesn’t matter desktop Linux use drastically increased. That doesn’t affect this quarter. This quarter is all about cutting costs and pushing AI.

  • Yeah, it sucks. Windows used to be dependable and solid, the whole point of the OS was IT JUST WORKS. They had some downturns in the past (Vista, 8) but you could just skip those. XP, 7, etc. Now though? There is no skipping 11, not if you want security updates. They could have made Copilot it’s own app that you can ignore, but no, even notepad needs AI for some reason. The start menu has ads, the notification center has ads.

Finally pushed me to switch to Mint this past year. My SO followed too. Been happier with it. Feels like I’m in control of the OS again, and it is there to do what I wish. Never going back.

  • Call their customer support. I realize they don’t publish a number, but you can often go in a round about way through any phone number they have. Any time you hit a computer voice, ask for an agent or mash 0. You are going to lose hours of your life doing this though.

The real suggestion: Stop giving Ubisoft money, cut your losses, and use a storefont that doesn’t actively hate you, like Steam and GOG.

  • Every other platform is simply worse. The only one who even tries to be better is GOG, of which they do a good job for DRM free, which gets sales from me.

My question to you is: why would anybody buy something other than on those two platforms? There is not a single advantage to Epic’s or Amazon’s game store I can think of. They don’t have good Linux support, they don’t have a good review system, they don’t have forums, they don’t have mod delivery systems, they don’t have any better sales, they don’t have family sharing, they don’t have in-home streaming.

Edit: And don’t get me started on the Microsoft store…

  • It’s very weird that Linux is broken up into Ubuntu, Debian, Arch, Linux (non-WSL), Fedora, etc, etc. but none of the other OSes are. Example: Windows isn’t broken into Server 2022, Server 2025, Windows 10 home, Windows 10 iot, Windows 10 S, etc, etc.

It’s very hard to tell what the total numbers are as you can’t just add these together, since an indivdual might use several.

  • Gold is a solid store of value. That’s about it. It isn’t a terribly good investment as it just doesn’t gain value very fast compared to inflation. But, as I said, it is a solid store of value, so if that is what you are looking for, it isn’t a bad option.

If you want to invest, you are better off with index funds held over the long term.

invested a lot in gold under the belief that in the event of like complete societal collapse

If that happens, a better investment is to make yourself as self-sufficient as possible. Have a way to generate power (solar + batteries), acquire water (well water), sewage (leech field), stored food (just extra cans of food you normally eat), acquire food (a rifle and somewhere deer exist), security (that same rifle).

None of that is unreasonably expensive or hard to get. But all of those are what you would want if you are worried about societal collapse.
