A bar chart of Windows versions, where the Y axis is the version number. All other versions are dwarfed by Windows 2000.

Don’t forget Windows VISTA, which I believe is 6STA in Roman Numerals, which is right before Windows 7.

x dot com bluecheck + topic of post is AI booster shit + chart could easily be LLM output itself + the general collapse of awareness on the internet, could could come down either way i think

It would be impressive if this chart was LLM output seeing as it’s correct.

Isn’t it true that M$ did Xbox 360 instead of Xbox 2 because they didn’t want to be “behind” PS3? So techbros at the very least think that people actually think like that?

One time A&W launched a 1/3 pound burger to compete with McDonalds’ 1/4 pound burger and it flopped because amerikkkans don’t understand that 1/3 is bigger than 1/4.

java went from 1.5 to 6 or something, for the same reason. slackware linux went from 4 to 7 without touching 5 or 6, in a single year.

      people are what they are.

I assume that’s just an excuse they created after the fact because when they renamed 9 into 10, 10 did not confuse itself with 1.0 (or 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, or 1.04). Nor did Windows 2000 confuse itself for Windows 2.0.

Those latter ones all have a ., which would presumably have been part of the shitty version regex written by even the laziest Windows developer across history.

This is like the [x] nm IC fabrication process names. The nm length hasn’t been an actual measurement of a size feature on the transistors since early naughts. So 5nm process is just a name and I think the smallest controllable size feature is currently somewhere around 20nm. There is really only one company doing the smallest transistors so they get to name it whatever they want as long as it’s smaller than the previous one. It’s funny that they managed to work the names down to 2 nm process now because they’re approaching the size of a Silicon atom @ .22nm. Maybe the names will asymptotically approach that.

Hell yeah, I teach a science communication class and collect these things for when we talk about graph design.
