Each tile describes its water level as a single byte, 0-255. Water has 4 rules: gravity, flow into empty tiles (horizontal and down-diagonal), flow into partially-filled tiles (horizontal and down-diagonal), and equalize water levels (includes a check for “cavities” where the air pressure would prevent water flow).

The hardest part was figuring out air pressure emulation without adding an air element (which I tried and it worked but it also created a bunch of other weird edge behaviors and basically doubled the sim’s cost), which is why my demo shows off a bunch of different U-pipes. I think on an actual game boy I would end up optimizing that out and just adding a special tile to the ruleset with a name like “pressurized” to prevent water flowing into specific areas because that check is like half the sim’s performance cost.

But I’m happy with how it works now - made in Godot, I’m looking at making a puzzle game with this and some other reactive elements where you’re a witch restoring a tainted dungeon into a holy temple by bringing a magic candle to its core (zelda 2 coded in theme if not gameplay).

With the way everything revolves around magic and my intentionally low-fidelity atomic sim, it kind of reads as a “Noita Demake” to me now, which wasn’t the intent but is cool to think about.
