Every liberal oppositionists: “We need to do less identity politics!!!”

Also every “liberal oppositionists”: “We need to keep focusing on identity!!!”

We’re bad if we show our identities and we’re bad when we try to mind our own business. Never good enough.

Whoever’s shocked by that: The Green Party of Germany and the Green Party of Austria are one of the most Zionist-supporting parties of the “left“. The youth organization of the Austrian Greens even defends the IDF on Social Media.

Right, but the uk green party has a different track record then the german one and seemingly people had other expectations. There is no unifying green party line across europe except for (maybe) ecology.

On a side note, they’re always an ideological mess, the one here in france is very amusing to watch because they are so divided on every single issue lmao, it’s like 17th century courtpolitics drama

        the uk green party

aaaa stop it there is no UK green party. There is a Green Party of England and Wales, a Scottish Green Party and a Green Party NI.

The Scottish Green Party is a separate party that not only supports Scottish independence, but also was in Scottish government last term and successfully got an actually progressive and super-cool Gender recognition bill voted through Scottish Parliament (then the UK government intervened to stop it). They also successfully pushed through rent controls, expansion of universal healthcare, expansion of renewables and expansion of renters’ rights. They’re definitely not perfect, but they are 100x better than the “uk green party” as you put it.

Any sources for this? I’ve googled and literally can’t find anything even vaguely official on either position.

Best I could find was BBC describing them as still officially anti-NATO a few years back. So the only scrap I could find was in their favour.

Yeah they seem to be quite cagey about being openly against NATO since like a 2012 article on their website, but their foreign policy takes are still in the broadly anti-communist alliance (but their support for the BDS campaign and generally anti-zionist position is still commendable). Their commitment to an absolutely anti-military position effectively continues this lack of support for NATO but they are not so explicit about it anymore.

But their China takes are absolutely horrendous on re-reads of their manifesto: https://greens.scot/Manifesto/ExternalAffairs

Provide direct support to the Tibetan Government-in-exile, such as financial support and digital record keeping, recognising their role as the legitimate democratic representatives of the Tibetan people.

Use Scotland’s trade links, including the Government’s office in Beijing, to hold China to account over the persecution of Uyghurs, Tibetans, pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong, and others.

Ah yeah, that China position is absolutely bad. Still, I’ll otherwise critically support them as the best party option I got for now.

Fair point. But what they all share is the obsession with “liberal democracy“, right? I know no instance of the Greens in Europe that is able to imagine a world where we overcame this system, that is mostly run by big corporations and detached full-time politicians.

I think that’s more them becoming “institutionalized” (read: riddled people in it for the money) as they grow in the number of elected representatives.

I was a member of the Green Party almost a decade ago when I lived in the UK, they only had 1 MP and before Corbyn became the leader of Labour, and most people I knew in it were even against Consumer Society. In fact, back then they were pretty much the only genuinelly left-of-center party in England with Parliamentary representation.

In fact, I’ve seen shifts in the posture of the party top layers in other small leftwing parties in other countries as they grew their number of seats in the local version of Parliament - small leftwing parties without strong coherent broad ideologies, which grew up during the Neoliberal era, seem to be incredibly prone to rot from the head down when they achieve some measure of success, maybe because when their politics are pretty much made up on the spot based on some vague principles it’s pretty easy for slick operators to climb up in such a party and start taking it towards a “pragmatic approach”, which invariably means to do whatever gets the most votes (and hence for them personally, access to well paid political positions) and screw the principles.

    Not my green party, thankfully.

I thought that particular green party were even more loosey goosey and leaned even more the other way, even bent double backwards to over-accommodate. Did not think they were one of those greenwashing crypto-fascist green parties, like some countries suffer. Upon first encountering this, it seemed shocking, perhaps even a mite implausible… and then one looks into it even a little further… there’s always more to a story. Certainly more than one side.

Any time stuff like this comes up, my tin foil hat tingles, and I get a sense of wedge issues being pushed to distract from traction on really substantive issues (which if dealt with, would make these wedge issues non-issues anyway), letting crooks get away with it. We can stop falling for it, building sturdy bridges to ally across, not walls to divide us.

  • I was already mad, then I read the last line of their post about the hotline and got the kind of mad where you just see white for a couple of seconds.

They already had such little support. Why do this? This is exactly where those disillusioned by Labour’s policies were going to and they just snuffed out a good portion of that. Especially with that last line. Holy fuck that last line is rage inducing.

green party got filled with little labour careerists too fast, even there your party couldn’t hold the fort for couple of quarters.
