I found this image of a handbill from around the time of The Haymarket Affair, on the Chicago Historical Society website during a re-visit of the history surrounding Labor day 
. It’s still relevant today, and really highlights how much progress we still have to make in creating a world that’s accessible, accommodating, and kind.

If you’re not familiar with it here’s a brief history behind the events that brought about such “street literature”:
The Haymarket Affair
On May 1, 1886, Chicago unionists, reformers, socialists, anarchists, and ordinary workers combined to make the city the center of the national movement for an eight-hour day.
Between April 25 and May 4, workers attended scores of meetings and paraded through the streets at least 19 times. On Saturday, May 1, 35,000 workers walked off their jobs. Tens of thousands more, both skilled and unskilled, joined them on May 3 and 4. Crowds traveled from workplace to workplace urging fellow workers to strike. Many now adopted the radical demand of eight hours’ work for ten hours’ pay. Police clashed with strikers at least a dozen times, three with shootings.
The Haymarket Affair became a symbol of the international struggle for workers’ rights. It has been associated with May Day (May 1) since that day’s designation as International Workers’ Day by the Second International in 1889. The tragedy inspired generations of labour leaders, leftist activists, and artists and has been commemorated in monuments, murals, and posters throughout the world, especially in Europe and Latin America.

As a little note on the Haymarket text and it’s transcript, I have written a translation of the German text and had two major realizations:
- The German text is almost not patriarchal at all. It’s still referring to the workers in the masculine form, and only mentions “brothers” instead of “brothers and sisters”.
- The German text is heavily influenced by English and some sentences don’t make any sense, even compared to other German texts of the time. I’d call it Denglish* 1.0

*Denglish is the German term for a mix of “Deutsch” (German) and English in colloquial language.
I remember when I had to learn German in school, and we got to the gendering of nouns and for a long while I was sure it had to mean something that it was die katze and der hund. Like there had to be something that marked each word beyond arbitrarily being assigned a der/die/das. Which was silly of course because my own language has so little reasoning behind gendering it’s own nouns that a stereotype of immigrants is that they just learn one and then use that one for all words.
Also it can’t be Denglish because then we’ve got Danglish, Denglish and Dunglish
There is no rules to it in general, with the notable exception of words that are clearly from other languages, which also include all words that end on -tion (nation, finalization etc.). All of these are feminine in German. My favorite little detail about this is that a lot of French words (like “le visage”, “face”) which are taken from French, are very often used as insults but get the feminine article. If you refer to someone’s face as a visage in German, you are very much telling them that you don’t like seeing them or that you generally think they’re ugly.
German is not a fun language, and it always presents me with new proof that it is also such a violent and heartless language sometimes. And yes, we do have all of these glish-languages :P

There’s a fun phenomenon in Danish where because of the huge influence of Germany on the culture, but relatively little influence the other way, there are German phrases in use in Danish that are not in use in Germany. Either having fallen out of use or having been invented by German speakers outside Germany.
I don’t think Germans typically say Aber Dabei or Affentittengeil or “Keine Hexerei” And while many would say Eins Bier I don’t think it means the same thing

The expressions you mentioned mostly exist in German too actually! I’ll explan a bit more for the others
The term oberaffentittengeil (“extremely cool”, the individual words are “ober Affen Titten geil”, which very roughly translate to “top-shelf monkeys tits horny”) is still in active use, same as keine Hexerei (“no witchcraft”, which means the same as “It’s not rocket science” in English). Eins Bier (one beer) derives from a rapper (I think?) using the number instead of the grammatically correct form Ein Bier (neutral grammatical gender with an indefinite article, definite article would be “das Bier”).

“Eins Bier” refers to when two things are the same to you so the argument is moot. Like you’re discussing what to get for dinner and you don’t really care. Eins bier. And it’s old enough that my great grandad used it.
Aber Dabei is a hitch, problem or downside. You can use it in a way that makes no German grammatical sense. Like “And then there won’t be any aber dabei”
Keine Hexerei and affentittengeil appear to be the same though.

I will do my best to accommodate you. I think it’s despicable that abortion as a topic doesn’t get the CW, especially since it’s listed in the Code of Conduct as requiring a CW. We can only accommodate triggering content in a way that we mention in the spoiler tag which topic is discussed in the spoiler text. The terms for many of these topics are listed in the Code of Conduct (CoC) so there’s no misunderstandings (search the CoC for “content warning”). We have a shorthand for some of these terms, like SA. If you were to talk about this topic, a spoiler tag would look like this:
CW: SA
Some topics like sexual assault are abbreviated.
Meanwhile other topics have to be spelled out since abbreviating them would be too confusing.
CW: suicide
There is no real rule around abbreviating the CWs, but I always understood they need to be as precise as possible without being triggering all by themselves.

Figures. About a week in and my injection is starting to lose its effectiveness. It’s not at its worst yet, but I’m definitely feeling the “it’s about to get a lot worse” signs. And insurance won’t pay for the additional antipsychotic until they talk to my provider, and they haven’t contacted her about it. I love Medicaid. I love the US healthcare system. I wish no harm upon any of the people slowing down my getting what I need to fucking not hate every second of my life.
Sorry to hear this, the entire medical system in every country seems to be just awful. No sense of urgency at all in getting people the help they need, and obstacles put up every step of the way.
Yeah. Especially when you’re on the state-funded healthcare benefits. When I still had insurance through Dad’s work, things were pretty quick and painless. Now I’m on Medicaid and it’s sometimes like they’re trying to see how long they can drag things out. I know you know more about all that than I ever will, but still, it gets frustrating.
I do strongly suspect they do this in the hopes that the patient will either give up or die, and they can then save money.
Over the counter painkillers are fucking stupid.
Take two of the giant 550mg paracetamol tabs because my entire ribcage is trying to come unfastened, and it helps a bit, for like twelve hours, a day, tops. Then what, repeat cycle? I realised this was an issue years ago when I told my doctor I was taking several grams of ibuprofen a day, and dude was like “I am ordering a washout, no otc for two weeks” but what else is the intended result? If you aren’t subject to debilitating chronic pain, can you just take two for a headache once in a blue moon and be done? Must be nice…

Is there any reading material on how dehumanising the experience of applying for disability benefits is? The fact that you are only allowed to talk about everything you can’t do because any positive comment will get interpreted as a signal that you don’t need any support, it feels like I had to change my whole personality just to get through the process.
Hey comrade, apologies for the extremely late response. The process itself is 10000% designed to be a drawn-out, dehumanizing experience that breaks individuals down into over-simplified bureaucratic nonsense that requires extensive paperwork, something often referred to as “Administrative Burdens”, which can be anything from complex application processes to in-person appointments. It’s a really tough topic to find decent writings online for that have accredited sources, but I wanted to share a couple of links that appear relevant.

Okay, so I don’t have a medical degree, so I’ll admit I might be wrong. But subcutaneous is opposed to intramuscular, right? My injection says on the box for intramuscular use only, but the prescription instructions say subcutaneous injection once a month. I asked my provider about it, and she said subcutaneous just meant it goes on my arm and not my rear. If I’m wrong I understand, but I thought subcutaneous meant just under the skin while intramuscular meant all the way down to the muscle?
subcutaneous means injecting into the subcutaneous tissue, you want to aim the needle at a roughly 45 degree angle from the skin
intramuscular is injecting into the muscle, you want to aim the needle 90 degrees (straight down)
your provider is, incorrect? it is incredibly concerning that any so called medical professional is not either aware of the differences between subq and im injections or doesnt want to bother properly explaining them
if you are doing injections in your ass please take a little bit to educate yourself on how to do it, you really really really do not want to hit your sciatic its not a good time

Okay, so both when she and when her assistant give me the injection, they do it at a 90 degree angle, so it looks like they’re hopefully doing it right? I do think it’s really weird that they were not correct about what the words mean, though. I don’t know if she just didn’t want to admit she was putting incorrect instructions or what. I am taking them in my arm; they administer it for me because I cannot handle needles.
they are probably doing intramuscular then, which is fine
from what ive seen most injected prescription medications can be done either subq or im and it doesnt meaningfully effect dosing, though obviously this isnt the case for everything
i would stress over the wording on the meds, this seems to be a common thing

Finally got my injection today. I feel better for now. She also prescribed an additional antipsychotic to layer on top because this gal’s got treatment-resistant psychosis babyyy! She said there are some risks with layering antipsychotics, but honestly I just want to not be frozen in terror all the time, so maybe it’s worth it.
It’s better to be forewarned even if the trade off is worth it though imo.
