Actually flat looking rims are better for aerodynamics and fuel/battery efficiency, the only reason we don’t do this more is purely for aesthetic reasons. (McLaren Speedtail)

Brake ducts, which I think are tubing systems that go from the front to the brakes. Also vents, you can notice vents in the pictures that are close to the wheel, designed to not trap air.
Space to let the brakes cool (though I think electric cars do a considerable amount of engine braking). Also, thicker tires are squishier and give a more comfortable ride.
There is probably a reason why wheel don’t usually look like this?
