The point is that due to not having an overarching law on animal cruelty, prosecution of even egregious acts of cruelty against domestic animals is limited in China. I would like to know more about the history behind this and contemporary attempts to create such a law. Like other highly industrialized and consumerized countries, you see for instance ‘pig skyscrapers’ (Chinese version of CAFOs).
As well as mention this recent petition. It’s a petition, meaningless outside of larger activism. I heard about it through a post by Curtis Sliwa, who was doing that sort of activism and not in a regime change-y way which is respectable. But petitions usually get you into the NGO world, leading to lines like
To International Brands: Many global corporations rely on supply chains and manufacturers based in the Jieyang region. We demand that these brands launch immediate ethical audits and halt partnerships with suppliers in regions that tolerate extreme violence and animal abuse. Blood must not taint global supply chains.
The change.org petition starts with an despicable isolated case of violence against puppies for dramatic effect, then goes on to call for corporate boycott of Chinese suppliers of animal products.
I agree with implementing plans for overarching reform and/or abolition of the animal industry, but applying this exclusively to China is simply anti-China efforts. Mass farming, by far the largest issue (as the change.org petition itself recognizes), is ignored everywhere else.
I think it’s saying anything made in that province should be boycotted which is just Cold War 2.0 bs
if you want to prevent isolated and cruel killings of animals, this shouldn’t be an animal cruelty issue but a mental healthcare issue and an education issue?
The children were sent to a corrective school 2 days after the incident. Really doesn’t seem like the authorities took this lightly.
I keep being reminded how one of the most disturbing examples of anglo dystopia is about a young antisocial violent criminal getting reformed into a functioning member of society at the cost of a few of his passions.
Making this about persecutting children seems a bit misguided to say the least.
Trying to turn this into boycott when the factories aren’t even involved in the animal cruelty seems weird as well. There is so much direct industrial animal cruelty in every country.
From rednote users I have heard/seen posts that China should have better animal protection. But this campaign seems odd.
Agreed, that’s why it seems to be just NGOs NGOing while people outside of that world do meaningful stuff.

Sounds like yet another attempt at attacking China and getting people to blindly hate them as a pointlessly evil and cruel nation of untermensch that must be exterminated. I’d pay it no mind. China does have issues with animal cruelty, but so does every western nation, but you don’t see these people demanding a boycott of working with US corporations because of the state of American cattle farms.
