It’s sickening how normalized this sort of thing was as recently as the 00s. Like, don’t get me wrong, it still is to a depressing degree, but even 20 years ago it was on a whole other level.
The culture was absolutely fucking dire for the longest time.
The internet and social media, especially Twitter and reddit-style forums, really democratized culture much more than it had been in the era of mass media like TV and radio. Of course corporate control was and still is a major counter-weight.
Before that, many people felt that the culture was off, but had no significant route to change it or even voice it. You were essentially a lone voice screaming into the void.
