I like brutalism, but it would be nice if there was more terrace space so people could fit some greenery. Apartments should have some growing spaces too!

We can do better than commie blocks but we are usually doing a lot worse.

Having only one staircase strikes me as a fire hazard.

it’s mostly not a problem these days because of all the other fire safety we do but exterior points of egress or having two stairways per unit are easy to have maybe at the cost of one unit width in that building

Japanese buildings often have an emergency hatch with a deployable ladder instead of full staircase style fire escapes. The hatches and ladder thing is usually on the balcony. Also the divider between balconies is often very fragile on purpose, so you can break through them and escape to another balcony if you have to.

The majority of these danchi (communal housing blocks in japan) were built in the 50s and 60s so there’s major problems with accessibility and outdated safety codes. A lot of them are being torn down and are being replaced with newer style condos and apartments because Japan is (very slowly) starting to become more accessible, but it’s still an issue in general. You’d think that with an aging population Japan would care more but sans-shrug

Do you have any peer reviewed evidence of that? Unironically asking for a friend. Although I think his claim was specifically large central stair case vs 2 at the corners?

No, I’ll admit I’m going entirely off of vibes. My thought process was “one staircase = one exit route = if it’s blocked, you’re fucked.” Reading some replies, though, it seems that’s not the case.

It’s normal outside of the USA. They just have fire safety in other ways.

I love the idea of more windows. You do some stuff like Singapore and put some greenary throughout and it would be perfect.
