A common refrain I hear is “I have no clue what is happening, but the game is fun”. Did Japanese game writers just drink massive amounts and throw shit at the wall? :D
I don’t think there’s a single JRPG that I can remember the actual plot except the general gist.
Or is there some strange cultural reason these games had labyrinthe writing and just strange plots?
Maybe a JRPG historian can shed some light on this?

Feel the same way about 6. Some people really hated the Octopath Traveller shtick in that game but FF6 has like a short story or a single anime episode of story for each character and I just didn’t give a shit about basically any of them besides the main few.
Terra could be so good if she was anything.
So weird to hear something about FF6 be called an “Octopath Traveler schtick”. Like saying Led Zeppelin was doing a Greta Van Fleet schtick lol
Many such cases sadly
