There’s a plenty clear reason why the established parties can get away with that an not and not a marginalized party that’s desperately fighting for tiny electoral wins can’t and I think you’re smart enough to know that.
There’s a difference between swimming upstream and swimming downstream, but there’s also a lot of logic to the idea that doing something unpopular doesn’t immediately (or automatically) get you removed from office, and requires effort to stop.
