If I can guess at what @bloogoose@lemmy.zip means, it is that what we socially recognize as skill is conditioned by what is socially productive labor in society. In past economic eras, productive labor generally meant productive of use value, but now in the capitalist era it means productive of value which embeds competition into the concept of skill instead of it being attached externally in a contrived competition. Because value is intrinsically linked to time and labor speedup, our historical notion of skill relates to how quickly someone can produce. In a different era there could be more appreciation for what might be called “wisdom”, something you can’t measure in a time trial.

Competition isnt inherently capitalistic. Sports predate capitalism and ideally would continue long after it.
