Dubya’s AG did that too. There was a hearing - I forget the details - and he said some variation of “I don’t recall” literally ~70 times. Back then in the ancient mists of past time - his actions came with a cost. He had to resign and then he couldn’t get a nice, fat, and juicy sinecure at some GOP law firm pushing paper around.
If something similar happened today - the member of Trump’s cabinet could say “I had to leave because of woke” and there would be no stigma and they’d probably easily get an even nicer sinecure.
I mean it’s literally why Hillary Clinton didn’t see any jail time over the email server, not remembering basic details of important events is a time honored american tradition at this point
