I used to read the fuck out of newspaper comic collections as a kid. One of the nicest things ever said to me by someone was that I remind them of a combination of Calvin and Hobbes and The Far Side. Pretty sure that was my goal when I was a 3rd grader. Anyway this lead to a large Garfield collection and my parents asking older friends and relatives who had bought old collections of comics going way back and me getting absolute fucking boxes. (I could draw good and had a cartoony style and read a shitload as a kid and my folks knew a good thing to nurture when they saw it there, totally dropped the ball on music but thats harder to know what to buy and more expensive). Amongst pretty much every issue of peanuts, I had like 6 cupboards 3 shelves each stacked with peanuts, pretty sure ive read every peanuts comic up to the 90s, was Heathcliff. I initially thought he was a Garfield ripoff but my dad told me Heathcliff came first and was an absolute badass who would wreck Garfield just for fun. So I had to check that shit out. Old pre-surrealism Heathcliff kinda sucks and I thought it was written like 25 years earlier than it was. Major 50s early 60s feel. But he was still clearly cool as fuck. Garf is depression me, Heathcliff is me at full power.
