I am disgusted that Australia entered

Especially given that their previous “success” was a plant from a church that is a cult, and we’re not in Europe >!I know that Australia is an “honorary” entrant or some shit!<

They should make it so you can’t vote for your own country at all. If you vote you vote for any of the others.

Means whoever wins isn’t just the act with the largest domestic audience

Interacting with Eurovision at all is not ok imo. Aside from gleefully hosting and spreading propaganda (one of Israel’s entries the past two years had blatant genocidal rhetoric in it) for a nation committing a genocide, the main sponsor is an Israeli company. Or at least it was in previous years. I haven’t seen anything Eurovision related this year.

That might be an empty set if we are talking about countries who were able to meaningfully oppose Israel. And for countries that condemn Israel once in a while but keep sending weapons and trading with them? Well…

I don’t know why Israel just had to keep participating in Eurovision and pushing so hard for the win.

You know how the competition goes, right? You get huge hype along the lines of “ooh I think Finland has real chance of winning this year” and then, I dunno, Bulgaria randomly wins or something. Every time. There clearly are forces at work beyond our mortal comprehension here, and no nation-state can meddle with it.

It’s because it normalises them. A huge part of their identity and the way the ethnic cleansing, apartheid, and genocide is sold or justified in the west is through this idea that pissrael is a “civilized” western nation. And a big part of that is them joining in fun stuff with other “civilized” western nations.

Pissrael is able to do what they do because their electorate largely believes that what they’re doing is the right thing, even now. There are plenty of polls to show this (aside from actual election results of course). Dispelling pissraelis of this notion plays an important role in ending the apartheid. And we have a historical example of ending apartheid this way. The exclusion from rugby games and cultural events were a consistent generator of “are we the baddies” moments for white South Africans when they had their apartheid. Avoiding those kinds of moments is very important to pissrael.

Anyway that’s how I see it.

Moroccanoil, the ESC sponsor, is despite what its name suggests an Israeli company. So the overall incentive structure there might be a tad skewed.

Also with all the paid votes they spoof across the world they basically help fund the competition twice. Why would the ESC want to stop all that money?

Before I had a smartphone, I used to consume memes in subreddits’ RSS feeds with the Opera Mini browser. The already tiny preview images were scaled down to 140x140 and compressed to 5kB JPEGs by the transcoder. At least the phone didn’t scale them down, the software is incapable of rendering images outside native resolution…

Yes, it’s worse than sans-serif would be at that size but I can read most characters and figure out the rest from context. And you can tilt the phone to adjust the contrast (bad viewing angles on that TFT, significant color changes even between eyes at normal viewing distance). It looks better in person without the moirè and in the dark with the scratches being less prominent.

      Dude, your setup must suck…

Why not use the 1 free MB/day my provider gives me? It takes a while to consume it over EDGE. It still works, this is r/me_irl by Hot:

(the text reads “5 hours ago / submitted by s[…] / [link] / [comments]”)

I used read so many articles on the bus via RSS… Or listen to FM radio and record music at 32kHz, 4 bits per sample… And I did use Reddit and email despite the utter lack of privacy and security (maybe encrypted in transit but not at the Chinese-owned company’s transcoder). Now I mostly just look up train delays when running between connections (my smartphone has no SIM, data is costly so I save the single MB for that). I stopped treasuring it, the display’s factory protective sticker tore off, resulting in scratches, and it fell on a spade, hence the crack.

There is also some indie development for the Mediatek MRE SoC platform despite Nokia’s sideloading challenges (each app has to be signed with a licenced certificate that only big studios like Gameloft and Soyou have so people use the fallback dev method of signing each app individually with the IMSI in SIM slot 1; reassigning built-in Twitter/Facebook/Yahoo shortcuts in the menu is only possible with hacks built into the NokiaReSing app). The flagship FOSS app is PeanutVxp, a GB© emulator (the optional 2x scaling, which also affects performance (drops below 30 fps) is obviously not a good fit for many games but 2048 is alright)

I have several 3410s and my service provider still seems to allow CSD (digital dialup), although at high prices (0.25 € per minute?! Is that all-inclusive or in addition to call and/or data rates?). They don’t seem to be running any endpoints to dial into anymore but I know a friendly hacker who could set one up on a commercial or Eventphone GSM network, I might be able to go online with it and load her website http://wap.blamba.de/

The Nokia 3410 can also act as an analog modem in case CSD is blocked or there’s an analog line or reencoder in the GSM provider’s infrastructure. Obviously, then the handshaking takes longer and the speeds are lower.

Practice reading archived cursive notes. Then you’ll be more than prepared to read this.

Edit: I want to be clear, this was not meant to be disparaging. There’s centuries of documents written in cursive, and it’s a reading skill that’s mostly been dropped in modern education. If you’re taught that skill, though, this round-hand font is not a problem to read. It is a weird choice for this meme, though.

Because the important factor is being in the European Broadcasting Area. This area is bigger than the European sub-continent and includes all countries with Mediterranean coastline and some countries to the east of Israel. Wikipedia has this helpful map:

dark green: Countries which have participated in the Contest at least once.

yellow: Countries which are eligible to participate, but have not (yet) done so.

light green: Countries which have competed in the contest as a part of another country, but never as a sovereignty.

red: Countries which were supposed to compete in the contest but withdrew right before the final.

      https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EurovisionParticipants.svg

As you can see Marokko competed one time, Tunesia and Lebanon had had at one time real plans to compete and Jordan and Irak are also eligible but opt to not participate.

Australia on the other hand isn’t eligible at all but requires a special invitation from the EBU which they have received every year for the last ten years and are likely to receive until the contest collapses.

Part of me wants to see what shitshow it becomes when it gets hosted in Tel Aviv.

    Otherwise I don’t watch and don’t care.
