Yes, essentially. They’ve tried to tie it to ‘narcoterrism’ (as I believe they did to justify capturing Noriega?), in regards to Venezuelan cocaine smuggling into the U.S.

The thing is, Venezuela’s cocaine production - especially that which reaches the US - is nothing at all compared to Colombian cocaine. Colombia however is a client state whose cartels have been often been C.I.A involved, so they’re exempt from rules.

In fact, during the 2020 election fiasco, Juan Guaido was spotted riding in a car with and posing for pictures alongside prominent members of the Rastrojos - the largest drug trafficking gang in Colombia. This was around the time Guaido and Lopez were looking to fund a private military to help out in a coup.

      Funny, that.

  • But US data for 2018, which shows 210 tons of cocaine passing through Venezuela, shows that six times as much passed through Guatemala in the same period.

“The evidence they point to against Maduro is thin, which suggests this is more about politics than about drugs,” said Geoff Ramsey, director of the Venezuela programme at the Washington Office on Latin America thinktank.

“Venezuela’s nowhere close to a primary transit country for US-bound cocaine. If the US government wanted to address the flow of cocaine they’d focus on corruption in places like {Hernandez’ }Honduras and {Morales’} Guatemala – both governments that the administration has coddled in recent years.”

I wouldn’t be surprised if US’s war strategy shifted to the Americas with coups in Mexico and Venezuela to solidify hold of the hemisphere and then focus on further isolating China.

People talk about the war on China like it’s 5 or 10 years away but I don’t think even the US is that stupid. They’re far more likely to focus on maintaining cheap labor and resource exploitation in the immediate area, and Mexico/Venezuela are both economic threats in those respects.

Of course, the Americas is bigger than just Mexico/Venezuela but would send a message to people trying to align with BRICS, a non-US order, etc.

Rubio has directly said this many times, just using euphemisims for regime change and invasions. When he talks about being in a new multipolar era focusing on Latin America “our backyard”, he wants to turn the whole of the Americas outside of the US into a hyper-exploited engine of war to be wielded against China.

Yup. That’s what I got from it too. I assume they’re very serious about it.

I just meant, I wouldn’t be surprised if this strategy continued to exist beyond Trump’s Presidency and extended to Dem administrations as well. Then it would really become the Empire’s long term strategy.
