To say his athleticism and strong background in ballet is what led to him being selected is an understatement; he went to the audition and they offhandedly remarked that Spider-man would have to be fit and athletic, and he does a casual backflip into a spider-man pose just trying to follow instructions and they did a double take and hired him on the spot.
