  • I’m not necessarily disagreeing with your overall point here (I have no idea why people engage with shorts, maybe they do love that format) but I wanted to push back a little on the idea that a product must be popular simply because corporations continue to offer them. Especially with social media, where users are actively discouraged from making their own decisions as much as possible by The Algorithm.

I think there are plenty of examples of things that people continue to use (and often even pay for the “privilege”) despite major aspects of those things being generally reviled by everyone who uses them:

    • ad infested apps and websites
    • gaming microtransactions
    • a new phone every year
    • cable service
    • insurance
    • HOAs
    • gasoline
    • Amazon
    • pants and dresses without pockets

  • I looked at the comments on a few of your posts, and people are telling you exactly why they are annoyed by them.

Your posts come off as low effort spam, almost like you’re treating Lemmy communities like a Discord chat room. Also, you post very similar kinds of things about the same couple of games on the daily, and people probably get tired of seeing samey stuff in their feed.

I’ve noticed that you’re making hyper specific posts (“what do you think about X mission in rdr”) in a general gaming community. Try posting those hyper specific questions in the communities for the actual game you’re asking about, where people who want to nerd out about some random mission are more likely to be.

It’s cool that you’re trying to engage people though, I think you just need to get some more practice at reading the crowd here. Lurk more, maybe. Lemmy isn’t the other site, we don’t necessarily resonate with all the same kinds of content here.

  • You got all that when you didn’t even finish the first episode? Damn, you are a tough audience.

I thought the show was pretty decent. It wasn’t literally perfect, but it was entertaining and beautifully shot. Some of the acting was kinda underwhelming, but some others did a great job IMO.

Especially Morfydd Clark, Joseph Mawle, and Ismael Cruz Córdova as Galadriel, Adar, and Arondir, respectively. Sophia Nomvete as Disa gave one of my favorite performances yet of a Dwarven character, and I enjoyed her scenes immensely.

I’ll probably rewatch that show more often than I will the Hobbit movies, which makes it a solid entry by my reckoning, and it’s okay that it wasn’t perfect.

can we stop with the divisions and no true Scotsman bullshit on the left

No, because (A) liberals are by definition not leftists regardless of how little they know about their own right-wing political advocacy, and (B) ignoring the fact that there are differences among leftists (and liberals and leftists) is both wholly unproductive and furthers political alienation of the people whose opinions you want to be able to conveniently pretend don’t exist.

Additionally, just because you don’t understand leftists when they tell you that liberals are not leftists, doesn’t mean they are engaging in a No True Scotsman fallacy. It means you haven’t engaged enough with them to understand.

I use it intentionally all the time to distance myself from liberals, especially when talking to liberals (it’s a pointless distinction to conservatives). It breaks liberal brains a little less often lately than it used to, but while the repetitive conversation about the distinction is annoying, it also usually results in some wheels turning a tiny bit inside them.

  • Some great favorites of mine that I haven’t seen mentioned here yet:

    • Extraordinary Attorney Woo is a Korean drama which follows Woo Young-woo, a female rookie attorney with autism, who is hired by a major law firm in Seoul.
    • Lupin is a French series about Assane Diop, a man who is inspired by the adventures of master thief Arsène Lupin.
    • Ragnarok is a Norwegian fantasy drama television series reimagining of Norse mythology. It takes place in the present-day fictional Norwegian town of Edda.
    • Tribes of Europa is a German series set in 2074, 43 years after a mysterious global technological failure caused nations to slip into anomie and fracture into dystopian warring tribal microstates.

I’ve historically used PySide (the free-license version of Qt) but for simple stuff like you’re looking for, you might get some mileage out of the Toga GUI toolkit. It’s relatively new, but promising.

I’ve actually been pretty impressed with the whole suite of BeeWare stuff in my informal testing so far; it’s a nice little bundle of tools. (Specifically I’m interested most in their distribution approach; building Python apps for distribution is a giant fucking pain, but this group seems to have improved the experience significantly.)

That’s kind of a circular logic though; the DNC alienates voters who don’t like their blessed candidates. If they didn’t do that, and more leftist candidates like Sanders were welcomed, then the “average Democrat” might look a bit different.

Hillary won the popular vote in 2016 by a nearly 3 million vote margin, I don’t think you need to feel any regret over your one vote going to someone else you actually wanted to vote for.

Also, even if she’d lost the popular vote too, it ain’t the voters fault that the DNC keeps deliberately sabotaging the good candidates in their primaries to give us turds.

  • KDE Connect should fit the bill; despite the name, you don’t need to be using KDE (or Linux even) since there are clients for every major OS, even mobile.

Among many other cool features, it lets you easily and simply just send a file from one device directly to another on your local network. I use it all the time to send photos from my phone to my desktop without plugging anything in, for example.
