some people are afraid that they’re turning into their mother or their father; while i’m turning into both at the same time.

i was a starving college student with $20 to my name and a dead windows me desktop computer that had an entire semester’s worth of school work trapped inside of it.
i had read about linux before and saw that i could buy a couple of mandrake cd’s from a magazine at circuit city for $5 or borrow $169 from someone to buy a windows xp installation disk.
i bought the magazine; installed linux; and taught myself (with google’s help) how to copy all of my school work onto a usb drive. i finished those papers using the school’s computer laboratories; and then kept on using the linux installation from then on in 2002 until now.
i was wondering if i was the only one that felt this way; since i keep getting banned and named called on lemmy.world and shitjustworks every time i try to let newbie leftists posters know that lemmy.world doesn’t not represent the lemmyverse and that they’ll get a much better experience if they try almost any other instance.
i’m wondering the same thing; $1.5 million is A LOT of chicken wings!!!
wholly agreed and i find it troublesome that the reddit refugees have pushed so hard to turn some lemmyverse instances into mini reddits, complete with that mainstream reddit opinion.
lemmy.world has become my main source for finding opposing view points to learn from and, fortunately for the entire lemmyverse, the engagement is (very-very-VERY) slightly better than reddit.
The latter is much more amusing
same here; but likely for different reasons.
i like learning about viewpoints that differ from mine; i think they help me question my own beliefs and, usually, it re-enforces them.
they already are under the good samaritan laws; they use lawsuits as an excuse for their shitty behavior.
i never expect the conversations to be productive, especially with liberals; but i don’t find that the discourse forces me to re-evaluate my views and it usually strengthens them.
i don’t like seeing it either, but cocooning yourself into an echo chamber doesn’t help thing at all.
Hot and Active feeds pull in a lot of things that are up to 2 days old, but by 12-24 hours at the most, nearly all conversation is done.
that’s why i’ve switched to “new”
what are the disadvantages?
other views so get presented and debated (and downvoted), but they are not filtered out and insta-permabanned. It is way more engaging.
this is my favorite quality of the lemmyverse; you’re not required to follow the groupthink out of fear of being banned and the plethora of viewpoints guarantees that groupthink isn’t as powerful as it is on reddit or twitter.
they’ve also taken away medals from athletes displaying signs of solidarity with social justice movements; so yes, very on brand for them.
i’ll start the countdown for when it gets banned in the united states.
Phone calls from PCs?
it doesn’t even do that anymore. lol
they’ve done it multiple times before; you shouldn’t expect a positive justice from congress.
biden has proven himself to be a netanyahu lapdog and our only hope is that kamala is not the same.
given as how kamala only paid lip service to the genocide, i suspect that she’s not much better.
the bank i used for one of my student loans came after me with legal action like this after my 3rd layoff and they’ll use every single legal bit of legal fuckery they know to maximize your stress and to make sure that you cannot afford to put up a defense.
also the federal government gives them carte blanche to your finances once they win and permanent-for-life rules (both thanks to biden) so that they can keep coming at you for the rest of your life until you die.
either you go the easy route and use a distribution targeted towards low spec systems like damn small linux or you go the difficult route and implement the same measures that they implement onto your debian installation.
last time i was in your situation i ended up doing both and i’m glad i did because my version of the build never worked as well as the custom distro.
