  • Well, yeah, if you talk to someone like they’re a stranger it’s going to sound awkward. I already know my friend’s names and details about their families, because we’re friends. I’m not thinking of approaching random people in the street and spouting private details of their lives…

The reason I said that it would have information that they chose to share is for precisely that - they’ve actively chosen to share that information with you in particular. An actual conversation between friends would be more like

Hey stranger, long time no see (slightly silly intro between friends, assuming the info hasn’t loaded yet). How’ve you been?

Yeah, not bad thanks. Busy with the kids, but all good (hopefully by now everything’s loaded)

I can imagine. How’s Kelly (one of the kids) finding school? Is she excited for her birthday?

Oh, she hasn’t stopped talking about it. I’m dreading having a house full of overexcited kids in the house for her party, but she’s really looking forward to it.

Yeah, I don’t envy you for that! (Both laugh, because as much as dads love our kids, birthday parties are hard work). Anyway, I’ve got to go. Nice to see you again Carl, good luck with the party

Much more organic when you have an actual conversation with a friend and don’t just randomly spout facts at someone 👍

  • This is what really bugs me with technology like this. I have some memory issues where I can’t immediately recall details sometimes, so forget things like names. Something like these glasses with a non shitty version of Facebook would be amazing for me.

Imagine walking down the street and seeing someone you know, and a little window pops up with some relevant information that they’ve chosen to share with you. It could have their name and a few lines of other information, like saying that their birthday is a few days away, or their kid’s and partner’s names.

Instead we’ve got the shittiest version possible where they just suck in as much data as possible to sell to other shitty companies 😤

  • Also, one big problem with this is copyright

It could work as a music sales service too though. Have software that matches the tracks in the playlist to tracks in your library, maybe with a confirmation / manual match dialogue, and a link to the equivalent of iTunes to buy any missing tracks.

Give the option to buy albums too, so if someone sends you a playlist with a new Billie Eyelash single, for example, it could also recommend the album it’s from.

For those of us with large libraries, we just match the songs, but it’s got the potential to make money for the artists too. I believe that Discogs and MusicPicard? can match tracks to albums, and link to artists stores, so at least part of the sales side exists already :)

  • It’s not though, is it? You’re replying to a question post here, in a community for questions. A significant portion of Lemmy is communities for questions, media, memes, and tech conversations.

Of the posts that share links, a decent number of those are either posted with a summary to encourage discussion, or are at least posted by a human that you can speak to. A headline and link to another site, posted by a bot, does nothing to encourage interaction with Lemmy. It’s literally a link that points to content somewhere else

  • Yes, that’s what it does by default. The problem happens when you open a new tab to search for something, for example, and the update screen and restart distract you and you forget what you were going to search for. It’s like the feeling you get when you walk into a room and can’t remember why.
