  • Linux is obviously very good, but you are right, we give Linux a pass sometimes because we ‘build’ it. We tend to overlook its flaws because we want it to be better than the competition.

    I’ve recently had an upgrade fail to the point of a reinstall, a folder that I can’t share between two users on the same laptop, and shutdown buttons on two computers that disappeared. If those problems happened on Windows, I’d be really annoyed, but because they happened on Linux, I just fixed them and carried on.

  • Still, don’t they require ID and phone number and shit these days ?

    I’ve got no idea. I haven’t had to do either, but I’ve had my account for years, and pretty much only use it to keep track of birthdays.

    I’ve used marketplace a few times for buying and haven’t had to add any extra info, it just connects me with the seller through Messenger. I’m in the UK if that makes any difference.

  • It has been an unwritten agreement since forever (or at least as long as there have been ads on the web) that if you consume the content, you pay the creator by looking at the ads on their site.

    Downvoted because this is objectively wrong.

    I’ve been using the internet since the mid 90s, and there were very few ads then. The ads that did exist were mainly banner ads pointing to other sites, for example. Ad companies got wise to them and started posting their own ads, then started using invasive technology like popup ads and animated ads.

    From the first time these types of ads were used, there have been complaints against them, and adblockers were developed.

    At no point did I agree to view ads on the internet, and the vast majority of people only put up with them because they don’t know that there’s a way to get rid of them.

  • I’m not sure about Windows 11, but I’ve transferred a licence on Windows 10. If OP gives the existing computer an unique name it will make transferring the licence slightly easier.

    You need to install the same version of Windows on both computers - home or pro, not the version number

    Build the new PC as usual and start the Windows installation. When it asks if you have a licence, select the option to add it later (I can’t remember the exact wording). Finish the installation and install your drivers. Either click the activation popup, or go into settings and click on the ‘This computer isn’t activated’ box. Open the activation troubleshooter.

    There should be an option in there to transfer the licence from your old computer to the new one. If you have multiple licenses, having the unique name for the old computer makes it easier to see which one is the correct one.

    @Mighty@lemmy.world hope this helps :)
