This is like a burglar trying to negotiate that you open the lock and just let them step into the hallway.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What does someone say or do for you to consider them intelligent?
1·12 days agoFor me, intelligence isn’t about what someone knows - it’s about how they think. There’s no single thing someone could say or do that would instantly make me see them as intelligent. It would have to be the consistent demonstration of logical, rational thinking over a long stretch of time.
Frankly, it’s way easier to spot stupidity, and a huge number of people can hardly wait to broadcast their ignorance.
Back in the day, Apple had to tweak the shuffle feature on iTunes because truly random wasn’t random enough for people. It seems incomprehensible to some that a random playlist would play the same song twice in a row. People should roll a die more often.

0·19 days agoWhich is no different than Iran supplying Russia with drones.
Well that’s just disingenuous and you know it. There’s a big difference between offensive and defensive drones. Iran is helping Russia kill Ukrainians. Ukraine is helping Gulf nations (who didn’t start this war) defend themselves from attacks from Iran. No Iranians are dying from Ukrainian drones.

Electric Vehicles@slrpnk.net•And yet only one of them gets flogged in the media
2·1 month agofuels battery fires
Not true. They put out burning electric cars with water all the time. The issue is that it usually won’t stop the thermal runaway reaction - it just pauses it. The car might re-ignite on its own later. That’s why my local fire station has a container full of water that they submerge the car in to cool the battery pack down and actually stop the reaction.
According to various tests, water has been found to have the most effective cooling effect. On the other hand, different reports have stated that extinguishing battery packs has in the worst cases taken several hours and required several cubic meters of extinguishing/cooling water.
Especially in Central Europe, in certain areas, so-called extinguishing platforms are commonly used for extinguishing and cooling electric vehicle battery fires. In the extinguishing platform method, the car is submerged in water. The advantage of this method is that it effectively prevents the fire from spreading, and the contaminated extinguishing water can also be collected. In the method, all battery cells - including undamaged ones - go into short circuit, and as a result, no combustion energy remains in the battery pack.
In practice, this means at least several days of submersion to ensure that all battery cells have short-circuited and that the battery’s charge has been completely discharged. As the fleet of electric vehicles becomes more widespread, it is worth considering whether submerging the vehicle is an efficient and appropriate method.

I find that it helps me better tolerate unhappiness rather than actually making me happy.
I didn’t think I’d need to explain the difference between saving money and earning money but here we are.
When you earn money, you get a check you can spend on more stuff. When you save money, you don’t get a check - that would be earning, not saving. Instead, you’re spending less, which means you have that money left to buy something else. Those savings are effectively what you “earn.”
When you download a $40 movie for free, you’re left with $40 more to spend on something else. It doesn’t matter whether I hand you $40 to buy the movie or you pirate it - in both cases, you end up with the exact same amount of money afterward.

01·1 month agoWhat you get from pirating is not having to pay. Purchasing a movie still gives you the same entertainment and cultural capital.
Nobody is obligated to hand out for free something they put time, effort, and capital into creating and running. If someone can justify to themselves that it’s okay to download it for free, then criticizing AI companies for doing the exact same thing is hypocritical on their part.
Making money and saving money achieve exactly the same thing: you end up with more to spend.

04·1 month agoDoes this work both ways? If Cuba can do it, then AI companies can do it too? Or are we just gonna keep running with the double standards?
I frankly never quite understood why so many piracy advocates lose their minds when AI companies do the exact same thing they do. I don’t buy the “but it’s for profit” argument either - downloading movies, games, or apps does the exact same thing. There’s no practical difference between saving money and earning money.

I said the same thing last time this was posted: I went on a handful of hikes with my ex back in the day and all I’ll say is that it wasn’t me complaining the whole trip.
