Not that that’s good, but the idea that politicians in a liberal democracy are “selling us out” when they don’t act in our interests is a fundamental misunderstanding of the class relationship between the ruling class and the workers in capitalism.

Oh, I totally agree. I just don’t like seeing this talked about as “selling people out”. He has genuinely never been on the side of the people he’s hurting, so it’s not a betrayal, and as I say I think it elides the class character of the relationship he has with workers/the nation as a whole to act as though it is a betrayal.
I’d love to ask these types like “hey how does it feel to be absolutely shameless, like so low you’d sell out your own mother for a nickel?”

Yep. It’s because the rich view other people as lesser beings unworthy of respect. Respect includes not lying brazenly to one’s face.
