Have a friend that before I largely stopped drinking I considered my canary in the coal mine because he probably still puts away at least 3-4 drinks a day, the employees at the corner store near his house all know him by name.
I lost my best friend to alcoholism so I have a complicated relationship with it. He was worse off than your friend, at the end he was almost exclusively buying everclear. Him passing definitely was a bit of a wakeup call, I still enjoy having a few drinks once in a while but I’m definitely more aware of the possibility of it becoming a problem
Yeah I’ve fortunately largely lost my taste for it and only drink a handful of times a year nowadays, have seen a few people either die or just look absolutely ravaged by substances.

There are lots of people who get drunk every day, and 3-4 is nowhere near what it takes to reach that level.
It amazes me the amount that people spend, and the degree to which they punish their bodies for literally no benefit.
You know you have a drinking problem when the bartender knows your name

…and you’ve never been to that bar before
