If I’m not mistaken you can put the image description inside of the square brackets before the image URL and it’ll get added as alt text to the image so screen readers will pick it up.
I swear I tested this when I started using lemmy, sorry for being wrong. I have to admit it makes sense to fix it even if it might break some old posts
