i gotta wonder what the calculus here is. like, how difficult would it be to just quietly lay in the cut, pay the occasional lip service to being pro-west/pro-eu, but generally wait for a more favorable / organized atlanticist coalition to backstop the regime.

Probably because there aren’t enough western style liberal elites in Ukraine. The phenomenon of cosmopolitan liberal internationalist oligarchs requires you to be the one doing the imperialism, rather than some shitty post Soviet state getting screwed. Instead, Ukraine, Russia, and so on all have capitalists who don’t signal that kind of stuff because they’re not the heads of a consolidated world system. They came to power or are funded by businessman who survived the 90s by being some real public private collaborators. Mafia types that aren’t exactly selling protection rackets by saying they’re pushing for human rights.
Maybe Zelenskyy is more liberal than his backers, or maybe he’s just trying to let western capital in to a country with let’s just say nationalist problems.
Western style liberal elites are completely okay with Nazis, though. They just don’t like that it proves Russian propaganda true.

I don’t think disliking Israel is exactly an ‘unpopular narrative’ (I dislike this turn of newspaperman newspeak) especially in places outside of
