Problem was that white people wanted a return to a quiet peace instead of making sure that justice was carried out
I mean the northerners were super racist too. I think it’s worse than them simply wanting a quiet peace.
Yeah, they never wanted to go to war with the south until it became very apparent that the Confederacy was willing to kill them to exert their right to keep on enslaving people
Even a good chunk of the abolitionists were racist, they just didn’t want black people around even as slaves

There were definitely places where this was the majority opinion, but I think the most popular abolitionist stance was that slavery was economically backwards and it would be better for the white population to have a more liquid labor pool, etc.
yes, most abolitionists were workers who couldn’t get the wages they wanted because their bosses were competing with companies using slave labor. it wasn’t sympathy for enslaved people as much as it was an attempt to get a better bargaining position
Marx’s writings on the Civil War make the class consciousness of the whole thing pretty clear. Even in the UK, there was solidarity with the white workers in the USA.
Not to say that it was entirely that, these union efforts also had a major progressive anti-slavery contingent that took a moral stance. It’s just that the economic conditions were the prevailing factor.
yes absolutely, Labor’s Untold History is a good book that goes into this as well
🥰
