Liberal thought has always had a spot for the “burdened by purpose, forced to commit terrible acts to protect the innocence of the blissfully ignorant masses” types, when the trope is about as real as iron Man. These types are always perfectly justified in their actions, unlike, say, a global South government issuing for the arrest of a literal traitor.
The protagonists in these stories always have such contempt for the people they are saving. Why do they bother?
