Radicle is really worth checking out https://radicle.xyz/
Don’t know if GitLab counts as alternative (it has no bullshit according to Brave Shields, and AFAIK they’re independent)
codeberg is such an obvious choice, i have no idea why people don’t immediately switch from GitHub
Because not everyone works on free software (read their FAQ)
They don’t allow for private repos, so it’s a non-starter for companies unless they want to self-host.
What? All my codeberg repos are private.
If you do not want anyone (apart from your fellow collaborators) to see your repositories, mark your repository as “Private”.
Check out Forgejo, it’s what codeberg uses as far as im aware. They’re the only ones even attempting to put the fediverse into git
I recently came across another forgejo instance: https://lavaforge.org/. Seems decent.
https://radicle.xyz/ is not fediverse, but P2P
I run my own Gitea instance at https://git.benetou.fr/ but I admit didn’t look much at the federated aspect, yet.
Sadly I just checked https://forum.gitea.com/c/federation/10 and despite few attempts, e.g. https://nlnet.nl/project/Gitea/ and eventually potentially upstreaming via forgejo https://forgejo.org/2023-01-10-answering-forgejo-federation-questions/#will-gitea-also-gain-federation that does not seem to be usable right now.
I’m checking https://forgefed.org/ which I learned about via checking federation on Gitea and it looks nice, in theory, but until I see an actual list of instances federated together I’ll just applaud the effort from afar.
FWIW that lead to discussion in https://codeberg.org/ForgeFed/ForgeFed/issues/77
