Skillful blend of comedy and horror. Stephen Root is brilliant as always. The actress who plays patricia is particularly a scene stealer but really everybody in the cast is phenomenal. First time ive felt this hooked on a show in a while.
I’ve been enjoying it. The tonal balance is good, and the characters could really work together given some time to cook. Not every episode is a winner.
I like it, and it’s the first thing I think of when people say “Black comedy is just code for ‘not funny’”, because it’s so thin on flat-out humor, but most of the episodes are funny in a dark way. That’s black comedy, as far as I’m concerned. It’s a funny show, and I’m very much enjoying it.
It’s also very refreshing that it doesn’t have the Steven King stank on it. I’m so sick of his style where it’s “scary” primarily because the characters act as if it’s scary. In Widow’s Bay, it’s scary because almost no one has any idea what the fuck is going on, and the characters are trying to figure out what the rules are at more or less the same pace as the audience. A lot of the humor comes from the comedic timing of dry lines, which is still humor.
Tom’s little startles crack me up.
Without spoiling it. The last episode at the end with the shotgun bit had me dying. It’s such a good show.
I know this post is two weeks old, but I just finished the first season, and the last few episodes were great. The last one was particularly hilarious, and had some great worldbuilding with the two-tier managerial class videos that were truly terrifying. They reminded me of the videos in Control.
