Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, commonly known as zombie-ant fungus,[2] is an insect-pathogenic fungus, discovered by the British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace in 1859. Zombie ants, infected by the Ophiocordyceps unilateralis fungus, are predominantly found in tropical rainforests.
I actually culture a form of cordyceps that shares an ant sounding species name militaris. But it infects caterpillars.
That fungus is nasty. 😣
And that’s why we’re warm blooded!
There’s a newish hypothesis that the reason mammals rose to power after the asteroid killed most dinosaurs was because the fungal spread that followed the impact due to the ash-filled sky and sudden rise in dead plant and animal material would have led to a huge rise in fungal infections, which are far more severe in cold-blooded animals than warm-blooded ones, allowing mammals to live longer and have more offspring than reptiles in spite of the fact that reptiles would otherwise be far more suited to survive in a food-scarce world.
A more amusing version of The Last of Us?
It could a prequel. When people still thought it was benign and kind of cute. ✍️😎
