Heat deforming the rails is an issue that can be solved by cutting more expansion joints into them.
Lemme guess… the tracks are long, long pieces laid down and attached to concrete ties?
Just painting the rail beds white or using white gravel for the beds also goes a long way.
Thing is, the rails laid dwn in the 19th century across the southwestern US passed through some of the hottest parts of the continent, and buckling wasn’t an issue then because the trains went slower and the track segments had a larger gap for expansion.
There’s no excuse for lousy engineering that ignores environmental conditions. None at all.
My city bought a train. It doesn’t work when it snows. The city is famous for getting a few blizzards every winter.
However, the train also doesn’t work in hot weather as the components start to deform in the heat.
It cost 9 billion dollars.
