So October is coming, and this is as good a time as any to switch to linux, but it is somewhat of an overwhelming task. I’m already used to desktop linux, but I am NOT good at migrating apps and settings and stuff. So I’ll have some blindspots. I thought perhaps we could come up with some kind of collaborative outline for how to do it. Here are my ideas.
- Make backups of all data.
- Install linux as a dual boot / new machine.
- Troubleshoot any hardware / software issues.
- Make some lists on windows of apps
– Apps you absolutely need to have / replace
– Apps that would be nice to have / replace
– Apps that you don’t need to migrate over. - Migrate user data, files, etc., to linux
- Install apps on linux
- For each app on the lists
– export settings and data from windows
– import settings and data into linux
At each step along the way, you can check things off the list.
Not everyone can switch to linux, but for those who want to, would this be a good procedure? What would you add to it?
I know this isn’t the answer most people are looking for, but Windows 10 LTSC can be downloaded from here and activated with a script from the same source. It’s supported until 2032 or somewhere around there.
This is just an option for those who really can’t move to Linux just yet.
Edit: It also has much less of Microsoft’s BS built in.
i did it last march. decided to just delete windows and install mint on both my computers. love it.
just remember to disable bitlocker (some dumb windows thing on the drive) before you do (your keys SHOULD be in your microsoft account if you linked it)
i also made use of gdrive to keep stuff i absolutely wanted to keep so i could transfer it back after i upgraded to linux :)
I used Cinnamon Mint for a few years. I just moved to Fedora KDE after buying a nice shiny AMD 9060 and oh my does it feel great.
As far as your list goes, it looks great.
