My more serious response is that as Western political scientists would put it, this is the first time in history where a developing country is now one of the world’s largest economies, whereas the EU economy is relatively stagnant and not growing. It is entirely possible that China’s economy can and will exceed the entire EU bloc (assuming it continues as it is rather than doing a Japan-style bubble burst), and the idea that might not be running the world anymore after centuries in charge is terrifying to them. Yeah, China actually hasn’t been acting as a threat, but from their perspective, a new superpower is always a security risk.
I mean that China has not done anything in their own ocean front let alone the Atlantic unlike Big Satan.
