For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (2007), a Gainax series about a dystopian future in which evil nobles have forced the masses underground with the help of giant superpowered robots. A couple of underground laborers manage to escape to the surface and quickly begin fighting against the evil machines oppressing humanity. Expect the usual anime antics from there, with characters shooting beams and glowing to solve the plot and such. Episodes 25 through 27 tonight, finish off the series. Tonight will run a bit long, so we will begin right at 8PM EST. After is that is Gurren Lagann: Childhood’s End (2008), a compilation movie of the first half of the series that adds about 20 minutes of new footage. Unlike most compilation films, fans generally consider this one to be essential viewing.

Last is The Animatrix (2003), a direct-to-video animated anthology released concurrently with The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and Enter the Matrix (2003). It consists of nine segments, each of them helmed by a different director and animated in a different style, and all of which expand on the lore of the Matrix universe. Most of the directors are Japanese, and include Cowboy Bebop (1998)’s Shinichiro Watanabe and Ninja Scroll (1993)’s Yoshiaki Kawajiri. This was also the sole project handled by Square Pictures after the failure of its sole feature, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001). A lot of people like this, so let’s check it out.
