  • The reason why cars use cryptic symbols for lighting and similar settings is because these symbols are standardised and you (the driver) are expected to know them.

And in any civilized country where operators of heavy, high speed machinery like cars are required to get training from a professional (and not just like … their parents), you have to prove that (among other things) you know what those symbols mean to get a driver’s license.

And because these symbols are actually the same in every car (because that’s required by law), the knowledge of what they mean and how/when to use which settings applies to every car. That makes these symbols far more usefull than writing out what each setting does, both for space reasons, and for quickly recognizing which is which.

  • I think there are three main issues (though I might be overlooking something):

    1. AI taking over peoples work is as much an issue for mathematicians here, as it is for programers, artists, writers, etc. elsewhere.
    2. We still need to check if these 700 papers are correct (AI makes mistakes at least as often as humans, usually more often). This involves a huge amount of effort. And if it turns out that they contain a bunch of mistakes, OpenAI is unlikely to care. To them, these papers have already served their purpose (generating headlines).
    3. Solving a problem in mathematics means being able to (formally) convince other people that your opinion is correct (massively simplified, but imo that is what mathematics boils down to), by getting them to understand why your opinion is correct. Having a pile of linear algebra spit out 700 texts about certain math problems removes the whole “human understanding” part of that.

However, it’s not entirely unprecedented for a computer to provide a proof that we don’t completely understand. I forgot the details (and I’ll edit them in if I can find it), but there was at least one problem that was solved using a computer and brute force trying millions of cases. That produces a proof much longer than any human could read in a lifetime, and iirc there where quite a few mathematicians unhappy about it at the time too.

  • By brick, do you mean a powerbank? I used to have one in the old bag for a while, but it doesn’t really fit (it fits in the bag, but it’s a bit too thick, so it prevents you from putting any other slightly thicker things in without putting serious strain on the seams), and in my experience, I didn’t end up actually needing it most of the time. I’m kinda trying a compromise with the charging cable, in the hopes that if I do have to charge my phone, I can find someone with a charger/powerbank/laptop/etc. (or use my own laptop) and don’t need to figure out if they have the right cable.

Do you have any suggestions for a small/flat multitool? (my guess is, pretty much everyone in this community has their own suggestion for a multitool :) )

How big is the emergency blanket folded up?

  • Yes, TinyCore-Core comes without a GUI (like the commenter above said, headless). When they say 28 MB RAM, that might even be overestimating it a bit. All of TinyCore-Core fits into just 17 MB. Of course that goes up if you need to install things, and I don’t know if it comes with an ssh-Server out-of-the-box. So for a proper server setup, 28 MB sounds pretty reasonable.

It blows my mind, that there is an entire Linux Distro, that fits into a modern processor’s cache. Who needs RAM anyways? (unfortunately, because of how cache works, we can’t actually use it without RAM)

  • What exactly makes this stand out as AI to you, and not just cosplay?

I can’t really find any of the telltale signs of AI. The books on the shelf all look fine, the mirror on the left edge looks perfect and I can’t find anything immediately noticeable on the costume.

If this is AI, I think it’s probably just the face, maybe the whole person, but certainly not the whole picture. But maybe I missed something, please let me know.
