wjs018@ani.socialOPMto Anime@ani.social•Anime Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion Thread [2025, Week 22]English1·1 month agoFruits Basket is amazing and I hope you enjoy it. However, don’t expect it to scratch the harem itch. It is more of a love triangle, and I feel like romance isn’t much of a focus for many episodes either when the story tends to focus on things like supernatural elements or family trauma instead. I absolutely love Fruits Basket though.
As a side note, I remembered that you mentioned Misuzu from Tomo-chan in your post last week. Well, prepare yourself for Saki Hanajima, the obvious character inspiration for Misuzu. I don’t think the ways that the male characters interact with her are as annoying though.

Overall the story has its ups and downs but I ended up generally liking it by the end. If you are looking for an alternative that is perhaps a bit less dramatic and doesn’t include the familial angle, you could try Bokuben (another series where I read the manga instead of watching the anime). I really liked how that series ended (and the manga does something a bit unique with the ending I really enjoyed).

wjs018@ani.socialOPMto Anime@ani.social•Anime Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion Thread [2025, Week 22]English1·1 month agoStill trying to hang on to as many series as I can find time for this season.
- Apocalypse Hotel - This show has been incredibly good. I can’t recommend this series enough if you haven’t checked it out yet.
- Ninja and Assassin - Like Apocalypse Hotel, this show has been incredible, but in a very, very different way. This show is probably one of the darkest comedies I have ever seen. Even having read the manga, Shaft really makes you feel the darkness.
- Evil Lord Isekai - This continues to be dumb fun. Not much happened this past episode though.
- Too-Perfect Saint - Great episode this past week with some big plot reveals. Looking forward to more.
- Rock is a Lady’s Modesty - A bit of a setup episode this past week, but Battle of the Bands is starting up next week, so I am looking forward to that.
wjs018@ani.socialOPMto Anime@ani.social•Anime Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion Thread [2025, Week 22]English1·1 month agoWeekly ranking roundup:
- Anime Corner - Full Results - Weekly Winner: Loser Ranger
- Reddit Karma - Weekly Winner: Gundam: G-QuuuuuuX
- Anime Trending - Weekly Winner: Uma Musume
Credit to /u/Abysswatcherbel for making the chart for reddit karma and /u/Nooble5 for the Anime Trending chart.
No Apothecary Diaries this past week means that there is a new winner this for the reddit karma chart this week. There is a whole lot of variation between these three charts all season long and this week is no exception.
wjs018@ani.socialto Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Kodansha cracking down on piracy in Reddit.English1·2 months agoSo, as a moderator for !manga@ani.social, I have been trying to keep tabs on how this has been developing over on reddit (especially /r/manga).
I believe that if a publisher were to request content or posts to be removed, it would most likely be directed to the instance admin. In my community’s case, that would be @hitagi@ani.social. It would then be up to them whether to or how to remove the content. If it isn’t a formal DMCA or if they are in a jurisdiction not bound by the DMCA, then they could always choose not to take action. If they did decide to remove the content, then the next decision facing them would be how to remove it.
One option would be to “remove” it (no different than a community moderator removing things like spam). This action would federate out to other lemmy servers and remove it there as well. The other option that is available to instance admins is to “purge” it. This removes the content from the local server, but does not federate that removal out to other instances. So, the offending content would still be available to the rest of the fediverse since it was federated out and the publisher would have to go play whack-a-mole with every instance out there. The purge option would definitely be the malicious compliance route.
wjs018@ani.socialOPMto Anime@ani.social•"The Ghost in the Shell" New Teaser Visual, PVEnglish1·3 months agoI think so…the manga creator also lumped a third series (Arise) in there, but I don’t think it is technically an adaptation of the same source material. Though, I am not a GITS reader, so not sure.
wjs018@ani.socialOPMto Anime@ani.social•"The Ghost in the Shell" New Teaser Visual, PVEnglish0·3 months agoSo, like I mentioned in the post, we don’t really know specifics about this adaptation yet. But, based on the visual and what the creator, Masamune Shirow, is quoted as saying in the ANN article, I am guessing this is a new adaptation rather than a continuation of a previous iteration of GITS.
I have heard from manga readers that the series can be pretty silly and humorous compared to how GITS is portrayed in anime. With Science SARU and the key animator for Dan Da Dan heading up this project, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this lean closer to the manga in tone and style.
Yeah…this is it. What a great first episode. Such great vibes, great art, interesting characters (even if most of them can’t speak), and an interesting mystery hook bubbling under the surface. I was already hooked just by the cold open and how it was spliced together between broadcasts of the extinction of humanity and the cheerful hotel commercial.
I am super on board with this series.
It took me a while after seeing this thread, but here you go:
Spoiler
The thing sitting on the desk behind her in the lower right of the picture is a pregnancy test.
Here is the original image for reference.
Actually, it’s not the racial prejudice that you think. It’s a different one. Here is the original image, dating back to 1923 in California.
I love the mimic in the background.
if that person has one
I only got ~300 chapters in, but I am positive that the series never revealed Najimi’s gender. It was too good of a running joke to give it up.
I wonder what Najimi did to get that handprint across their face. I am going to have to catch up with the manga now that it is about to wrap up.
Filterable post flairs and instance-agnostic links are my two biggest wish list items that I think would go a long way to making that specific community much nicer (speaking as a mod).
Apologies, but you will have to wait a day or two for my normal comments in these threads due to traveling on my part. I just don’t have the literal or figurative bandwidth to do much atm.
