More generally, we can all fall for reactionary crap if we don’t see it for what it is and if it speaks to some grievance we have. We need to be smarter and look at historical patterns, the fascists never helped any workers, they just got countless people killed, and letting them rise to power eventually leads to someone, either you or someone you care about, being next.

First of all, the US won’t beat China because they deindustrialized and China is the factory of the world. This won’t change short of a nuclear holocaust.

Second of all, most environmentalists want investment in greener energy so that we don’t destroy the world if we can avoid that. China already makes cheap renewables, and it will only get cheaper still. Europe’s energy crisis is tied to importing expensive US energy and not even trying to go renewable so they break off that dependency.

Third, as the US makes the world economy implode with a new stupid war the price of energy will only keep going up and up, so countries that heavily rely on importing energy will suffer a lot. You can’t techbro your way out of this, and this should be obvious, but no amount of ethnic cleansing can reindustrialize an economy. Not only is his whole ideology appalling for anyone with a modicum of empathy, it’s also not grounded in reality. But no, I’m sure if we all just believe in capitalism and fascism hard enough things will magically get better! Come on guys, the US is doing that and it’s TOTALLY not just a bubble!!!

Artisans own their tools, that’s what makes them artisans (rather than wage workers). I believe after the bubble pops there will be legitimate uses for the tech, and we’ll be able to run a pretty good iteration in our own hardware, but as it is now I’m uncomfortable with my employer having the power to decide whether I have the tools they want me to use for the job, whereas with code that’s less of a concern.

Human programmers at least can tell you where they got a snippet they copied, whether it was in the docs, stack overflow or elsewhere, and you can try to keep attribution if you care about compliance. Not only that, but most of our skills are related to designing stuff and recognizing which pattern to use, the specific implementation isn’t necessary the same unless we go look for whatever we saw in the past, as our memories don’t just record everything and repeat it word by word. And after picking up a new language or framework I only need to look around when using a third party library or some API I’m less familiar with, or when something breaks.

It looks bad in the short/medium term, but the bubble will pop, it’s only a matter of time until memory prices come down again and we move past the insanity of burning tokens like there’s no tomorrow. I don’t mean to downplay this though, lots of people and companies are struggling because of the AI bubble and the rush to build datacenters.
