Games@lemmy.world•Epic boss Tim Sweeney thinks stores like Steam should stop labelling games as being made with AI: 'It makes no sense,' he says, because 'AI will be involved in nearly all future productionEnglish
1·8 days agoIf that actually happens and the label becomes redundant, then we can talk about removing it.
Or better, inverting it to a “No AI” label for the people like me who will still care.
Tech bros always act like this : they don’t want to actually win by making a good solution. Instead they try to make you feel like their solution is inevitable and they have already won…
For a group of people who claim to be all about meritocracy and the “marketplace of ideas”, they sure like to short circuit those whenever possible…

Television@piefed.social•What TV series bungled a great concept that you'd like to see tried again?
18·9 days agoI want a faithful adaptation of Asimov’s Foundation, where it’s the 1940s in space like in the novels.
Guy gets to planet, immediately buys a physical newspaper with physical cash. Takes a taxi cab. Everyone smokes constantly. Space soldiers are bribed with dishwashers and fridges, computers barely exist. Every desk has an integrated atomic ashtray to vaporise cigarette butts. Scientists carry bulky pocket calculators.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Patriotism and nationalism are instruments of power
2·10 days agoTo paraphrase the Dao De Jing : “Only when the nation is in peril, do nationalists begin to exist”
A healthy nation needs not be defended so.

Technology@lemmy.world•An entire PS5 now costs less than 64GB of DDR5 memory, even after a discount — simple memory kit jumps to $600 due to DRAM shortage, and it's expected to get worse into 2026English
3·10 days agoIn moments like this I always wonder if I should temporarily make my PC unusable by reselling the component that’s overpriced.
Then wait out the shortage and buy 4x as much RAM then x)
Almost did it with my GPU during covid.
I use

Technology@lemmy.world•A Viral Chinese Wristband Claims to Zap You Awake. The Public Says 'No Thanks’English
5·12 days agoThe real solution is humane working hours. If you can’t wake up on time, it means you shouldn’t even be waking up at that time.
Some people sleep late. That’s normal. It should be accommodated for.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Zero tolerance policies in schools and mandatory minimum sentences have the same arguments and issues
6·12 days agoZero tolerance is idiotic. We don’t even have zero tolerance for murder for crying out loud 😅
Everything is subject to context.

Technology@lemmy.world•Scientists grow mini human brains to power computers.English
6·12 days agoGood idea, maybe. Neurons are unbelievably efficient compared to circuits ; I think bioengineering is going to be the future for many industries.
The savings to be made, in terms of money and resources alike, are just staggering. Our current approach to almost every domain is just brute force with a few extra steps, computers included.
Games you can’t pause. I love Dark Souls, but PLEASE give me a real pause button !
I’m okay with the inventory not pausing, that’s part of the game design. I’m not okay with the fact I can’t pause at all, so if my neighbour rings for their spare key when I’m fighting Kalameet I just have to die 🤷🏻♀ (true story btw)
Every game has controller remapping with Steam ! But the on-screen hints might get mighty confusing 😅

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•It was best as a silly toy language in the 1990's...
1·12 days agoJavaScript really depends on the people writing it restricting themselves to a sane (ish) subset, just like C++
My personal gripe with JavaScript is how horribly slow it is. C++ at least has the merit of being fast once compiled. I wouldn’t feel great contributing to a JS project knowing fully well that a rewrite in a faster language would be 10x as effective as anything I could improve as is.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•There should be a "last used combination" faucet handle for sinks so you don't have to balance hot and cold everytime during winter
0·14 days agoThe only correct kind of faucet is the kind with a thermostatic handle for temperature, and a separate handle for flow.
They are almost exclusively available for showers and that’s stupid. It’s the correct solution for the problem, with extremely few drawbacks.
The only improvement I could see is making the temperature handle short circuit to the drain until the water going through is hot enough. But I dont know if that’s really possible without electronics, and I really dont want my faucet handles to be plugged in or take AA batteries.

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•Valve says "the Steam Machine is equal or better than 70% of what people have at home," but I feel like that's missing the point
1·16 days agoThis kind of article, that just stretches out a simple point over a few hundred words, is absolutely infuriating to read.
TL;DR : Steam Machine has a laptop-grade low consumption GPU and will probably be more console-class than desktop-class. (Also, author has likely never taken a statistics class)

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•[Discussion] Should this community also cover the Steam Machine and/or Steam Frame?
23·19 days agoYes. We don’t need even more fragmentation on the fediverse.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•developer of game 'Rust' talks about anticheat on linuxEnglish
1·22 days agoThis is actually one of the absolute worst trade-offs they could have made, if you think about it for like 2 minutes :
They said 0.1% of players were on Linux.
Even if they were ALL cheaters, that’s still a tiny amount of cheaters you just “banned”
Almost 100% of whom will just cheat on Windows instead ; whereas all the legitimate Linux players will loudly complain forever.
They decided to sacrifice all the free PR from one of the most vocal groups of players out there, in order to get a ~ 0% reduction in the number of cheaters.
In more simple terms, they just shot themselves in the foot for no benefit whatsoever (though I do grant it’s a relatively small “gun”)
That sounds hilarious
