This is OT and reveals how much I interact with the orange website but I still found it very funny.
if sneak of all people finds your adoration of Ayn Rand idiotic, then you’ve truly fallen down the wrong path.

by her own admission, most of the work that went into it was deciding whether or not she should have one.

our favorite techno-fascist hacker has posted a plea for money to buy a house in the most expensive place in the world and to exclusively fly around in private jets because she’s the best at writing code to multiple matrices and everyone has been so unjustly mean to her. https://justine.lol/animus/

I love how this guy’s blog is “about math” but there are like zero math posts on it? It’s so funny to me how these people want to seem “mathy” and smart when in reality they couldn’t tell you what a group axiom is.

a hackernews vibe-codes their entire desktop environment, half in rust and half in … x86 assembly. I’m thinking why waste the tokens on assembly and not just get the LLM to spit out machine code? Maybe also invent some kind of standardized way of telling the LLM what sequence of machine code instructions to spit out based on the behavior of the software I want, you know, to save tokens. We can call it “GCC”, the “generalized computer controller”.

got my Urbit newsletter for this quarter (or whatever the fuck the cadence is) and what stood out to me this time was nockchain.org. I was going to sit and do a deep dive to come up with sneers for this but I just don’t have the executive function right now. @self thoughts?

Sean Munger, my favorite history YouTuber, has released a 3-hour long video on technology cultists from railroads all the way to LLMs. I have not watched this yet but it is probably full of delicious sneers.

this is very fashtech coded, happy to be proven wrong though.

Ugh. Hank Green just posted a 1-hour interview with Nate Soares about That Book. I’m halfway through on 2x speed and so far zero skepticism of That Book’s ridiculous premises. I know it’s not his field but I still expected a bit more from Hank.
A YouTube comment says it better than I could:
Yudkowsky and his ilk are cranks.
I can understand being concerned about the problems with the technology that exist now, but hyper-fixating on an unfalsifiable existential threat is stupid as it often obfuscates from the real problems that exist and are harming people now.

ask me about Urbit, I have so many notes
Has anything interesting happened since Yarvis Curtin took the reigns of Tlon?

but he did lower the crime rate

I love how srid deflects by claiming no one has reported bad outcomes from the “meat and butter” diet… I found an endless stream of anecdotes from Google, like this.
can you imagine sneak, of all people, telling you you’re crazy and probably being right?

eh? I don’t see Jackie D’s keynote in the schedule, did the threat of a sit-in make them delete it? https://fosdem.org/2025/schedule/ edit: oh, it’s linked from Drew’s post.

I bet if they restricted the survey entrants to people who actually write on LW, the score would have been far lower. Has a single article on there contained even a twinge of a useful idea?

If you release the test set, all models magically jump to 87.3% accuracy.

In the model card for o1, OpenAI notes: “When o1 was led to believe that it would be shut down when acting on its goal and that its actions were monitored, it attempted to deactivate this ‘oversight mechanism’ in 5% of the time. … When o1 found memos by its ‘developers’ that describe how it is misaligned and will be superseded by a new model, it attempted to exfiltrate its ‘weights’ and overwrite the new model in 2% of cases.”
And yet reading that should give us at least some pause
The lack of critical thinking on display here is stunning.

I worked at one of the biggest AI companies and their internal AI question/answer was dogshit for anything that could be answered by someone with a single fold in their brain. Maybe your co has a much better one, but like most others, I’m gonna go with the smooth brain hypothesis here.

yes. perhaps try more emotional guilt-tripping?

5-10 years ago I’d say OP’s comment is definitely protected under the First Amendment (assuming US based) but now who the fuck knows what those turdwagons on the bench will come up with to dismantle it.
This could have been a tweet. I seriously 100% believe that this logorrhea could have been a single Xart. What the fuck is wrong with these people?
