  • Here’s the thing man: It doesn’t matter one bit if you and I think they were terrible people for not voting Harris despite all the very valid reasons you have listed why they should have. (All of which I agree with.)

Bottom line: Dems didn’t sell themselves to those voters in a way that worked. We can be outraged that it didn’t work, but it didn’t work.

So, we can wring our hands about how awful our fellow man is for not seeing the clear moral imperative that we do (exactly like the Genocide-Joe folks have been doing for months), or we can recognize that Dems need to start doing things differently.

Personally I’m of the opinion that unless they truly are just there to put up a token show of resistance against R while serving the same goals (and I’m not yet cynical enough to really believe that), they need to stop with this “let’s move to the right and try for some R votes” crap. It’s not getting them any R votes, and it’s clearly pissing off a lot of D. Edit: And it’s ratcheting the entire country rightward.

In my 50+ years they have never really moved to the left for more than a brief teaser. Let’s see them seriously push for some Bernie or AOC crafted policies, etc. Some actual progressive fire. Stop treating the left like political suicide, and stop treating Republicans like they can be reasoned with.

  • Yeah, I don’t let it stop me, it’s just in the back of my mind sometimes. It seems like it might have that sort of aesthetic (IMO) to someone who hasn’t actually watched it and just looks superficially at a trailer or etc.

The graphic novel is on my must-read list, it’s just unfortunate that my must-read list is so long. 😁

Was a Gnome user until Gnome 3.

Since Plasma 5, I use KDE Plasma.

I’m just going to share my unvarnished opinions here, I clearly understand that Gnome users feel differently, and that’s okay.

    • Gnome 3 performance was objectively worse on every bit of hardware I tried than Plasma. (Unfortunately I had functional gripes with Plasma 4 so couldn’t use it.)
    • The years of faffing about I had trying to be happy with Gnome 3 and trying to use other alternatives until Plasma 5 was ready pretty much convinced me of this:
      • Gnome devs care more about achieving their vision of how a desktop should be used than they do about accommodating users who might feel differently. This is my perception, and it’s a deeply held opinion. No matter how strongly you feel I’m wrong, you aren’t going to change my mind. You can come at me if you want, but it’s going to bear no fruit.
      • KDE devs have a vision, but place nearly equal importance on ensuring their users can make different choices if they choose. If this isn’t true, they do a damn good job of pretending it is, and that’s good enough for me. 🙂
    • I’m unhappy with the degree to which it appears the Gnome team has actively worked against the ability for users to easily customize, and with various feature removals that at this point are so far in my past that I probably don’t remember the specific things that pissed me off, but I remember their explanations for feature removals being salt in an open wound every last time I cared enough to investigate their stated reasons.

Plasma 6 does everything I want the way I want. I have loaded it (and Plasma 5) on very low end and very high end hardware and found it performant and functional on both, consistently.

You’ll note I don’t claim it to be the best. There are folks out there for whom the Gnome vision happens to be how they like to work, or who aren’t bothered by whatever hoops you have to jump through currently to customize a Gnome environment, and I’m sincerely happy for those people. For them, Gnome is the best.

There are lots of other DEs and of course tiling WMs exist, but it takes me no time at all to have a fresh plasma install working the way I want my computer to work and looking the way I want it to look, and thus I literally have zero complaints. So for the past few years I haven’t even looked at any alternatives. If there’s ever a time that I don’t find the desktop product itself, and the KDE development team’s approach to desktop development, to be absolutely perfect fits for me, I’ll look elsewhere - but honestly probably not at Gnome.

  • Looking at the current admin and the Palestine situation, I don’t see how it makes a difference if D leadership care slightly more than R leadership about what is going on in Gaza. (Though I’m voting for Kamala anyhow, for the reasons you’d think.) They clearly aren’t doing anything about it beyond some exceptionally low energy lip service - and how many months did it take to even get to that point?

But I have to admit in a vacuum I personally wouldn’t have titled the meme that way. It’s Colonizers.

I also don’t think it’s low effort. It’s a worthwhile reminder that for as long as there are indigenous and less technologically developed populations located on land that wealthier and/or more technologically developed peoples want to exploit, we’ll just keep making the same cruel decision over and over.

  • Just because someone can’t demonstrate something doesn’t mean it isn’t true.

That’s exactly my point about whether or not she’s an asshole. Moreover, the outcome of the legal proceedings don’t depend on whether anyone can prove it.

But the outcome of the legal proceedings are entirely dependent on whether she can prove her assertion.

You disagree with my assessment because you are misinterpreting it.

if she’s conflating her orientation class with her just being a fucking asshole she should lose.

How would one show that in a court room?

no one is required to do so for this court room event, and hence:

Doesn’t really matter, either she can prove her case or she can’t.
