leftytighty@slrpnk.netto Anarchism@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Medicine production in an anarchist societyEnglish21·2 months agoElectronics are an interesting case. In our capitalist global economy we use extortion and threats to secure rare earth metals so we can use them for critical green technology and warfare while also using them to pump out televisions and phones for people to buy to replace ones that work fine (or could be kept working fine if we avoided software bloat).
Plastics are similar, they’re essential for medical applications but we also use our limited fossil fuel resources for cars and to wrap bananas at the store.
You could ask the question of how we could afford to let capitalism distribute these resources.
Working in the software industry I see tremendous waste, absurdly inefficient technologies being used because they’re cheap, etc.
We could all work less, work on the more important things, and make better use of our resources if not for the unnecessary inefficiencies introduced by duplicating effort, hiding technological advances from one another. We should be moving towards a cooperative rather than competitive economy.

- I suspect the professionals looking into this potential fraud are going to think of these things.
- when and how hard you choose to play devil’s advocate says something about you.
- whether well intentioned or not this is Musk apologia at best, and excuses/misinformation at worst. I think our Transport Minister does basic diligence before asking for an investigation and having the story in the media.
We’re all used to these “centrist” / “just asking questions” types and how they only crawl out of their holes to play devil’s advocate for fascists, it’s tired.

leftytighty@slrpnk.netto The Onion@midwest.social•Americans choose most expensive way possible to discover what goods made in CanadaEnglish35·5 months agoFair I could be jumping to conclusions. I’m just saying that even if it were true that the majority of Americans chose Trump in a fair election where everyone had equal opportunity to vote, then even that wouldn’t mean the people are getting what they wanted. Aggressive misinformation, decades of propaganda, capture of the media, these are all things that we can’t blame individuals for that would cause this.
If the United States makes its way out of this, systemic change will be necessary. Capitalism is at the root of this all.
leftytighty@slrpnk.netto The Onion@midwest.social•Americans choose most expensive way possible to discover what goods made in CanadaEnglish36·5 months agovery naive perspective. bigger forces than “the people” are throwing everything they can at your democracy and this “oh well” attitude is handing your ass to them on a silver platter.

leftytighty@slrpnk.netto Global News@lemmy.zip•Brazil condemns US after deportees arrive handcuffedEnglish1·5 months agoSadly the problem isn’t going to solve itself like that. We need to channel that anger into action. There are many non-violent actions we’ve yet to try (including a general strike) but they’ll take lots of organization. Violent options may be needed as a last resort as well, if history is any indication. Hopefully there’ll be support from the rest of the world.

as a society there’s more than enough to take care of a disproportionate amount of “non-workers” but instead we make up fake bullshit jobs and force people to work 40 hour weeks so a tiny fraction of us can send their second plane to pick up their girlfriend to go on a date in Italy
