javiwhite@feddit.ukto Linux@lemmy.ml•My week with Linux: I'm dumping Windows for Ubuntu to see how it goesEnglish72·6 days agoSeconded. I have endeavourOS on my desktop and mint on my laptops.
Endeavour (arch based) is great for people who like to tinker with the setup whereas mint is ootb ready to go, with most UX features ex windows users would expect.
I used to recommend elementary OS to Mac users, and mint to windows. Now I recommend mint to all, and to customise it to mimic Mac; if that’s what’s desired… As it’s just so damn stable in comparison.

Can’t remember if the comment here mentions it. But in the article i read; their 3 dogs were killed in the house fire.
javiwhite@feddit.ukto Main, home of the dope ass bear.@hexbear.net•Millenials what other odd things did you used to do or that you remember when you were youngerEnglish7·7 days agoMy partner has a gen Z brother. Recently her insta and tiktok handles were blasted on a throwaway tiktok account along with her brother’s. She didn’t even know until the person contacted her directly, saying her brother was a predator etc…
My partner, having dealt with predatory behaviour herself; obviously wanted to hear her out.
Anyway the issue was he’d apparently hypnotised her over discord chat (not voice/video) into calling herself a different name and buying heels instead of vans. That was the most coherent version of events we could get, as she just kept reiterating that he “stole her mind”. She lives in the USA around 2,500m away from where we are, and they’ve never met in person.
Ultimately it was left advising the poor girl to speak to a professional, as it seemed like she was having a bit of a breakdown, as well as advising her to speak to authorities if she felt predatory behaviour had been committed, rather than attempting to doxx his unknowing family members online.
Honestly it’s the most ‘much ado about nothing’ situation I’ve heard in a long time; and brought back not so fond memories of being an emotionally unstable teenager myself.
Hang in there gen Z. Brain juice levels out soon, and you’ll be picking up old people hobbies like fishing or pottery instead of feeling everything at once in no time.

I think this is my first username checks out on Lemmy. :).I agree; it’s the same reason it’s hard to state whether the trump shooter was or wasn’t a plant… Because whilst the outcome definitely benefitted him, you can sympathise with what would lead someone to those extremes. But it’s exactly that sort of public opinion about a group that makes false flags all that more desirable to them in the first place; It’s a lot easier to gain support when seen as a victim.
Still, any sane person realises that throwing a Molotov is not equal to routinely bombing children’s hospitals… But sanity left this topic a long time ago.
javiwhite@feddit.ukto news@hexbear.net•Suspect arrested for setting people on fire at pro-Israel event in Boulder, ColoradoEnglish6·8 days agoFalse flag operations have been used consistently in modern history to sway public opinion. To discredit the possibility as implausible is arguably just as outlandish as claiming X did Y without any evidence; especially when there is a clear vested interest in swaying public opinion on the Israeli genocide of Palestinians. (Online suppression of Gaza discussions. Media whitewashing of Israel crimes etc…)
To clarify; I’m not saying this was a false flag… I’m not really close enough to the subject to definitively say one way or another. And I definitely agree that tempers regarding the subject are incredibly high; so there’s the possibility that this was a crime of passion rather than a false flag.
I’m just pointing towards the fact that human history is a good barometer for this sort of stuff; and False flag operations aren’t exactly unheard of. Given Israel hasn’t exactly shown itself to be the most humane nation recently; why wouldn’t they use a historically effective technique?

Pop! Os has a focus on graphical performance, with versions containing preconfigured AMD/nvidia drivers depending on the users build. To claim that gaming hasn’t factored into the decision to focus on graphics would just be silly.
Doesn’t really feel as though that pedantry has added anything to the conversation if I’m honest, as the question was what would be suitable for gaming, and you yourself also recommend 76?
javiwhite@feddit.ukto linuxmemes@lemmy.world•Love your fellow humans that just want a working computer.English6·1 month agoSystem76 laptops are built for gaming.
They also created their own Linux distro called Pop! Os, which is designed around gaming, and fairly popular within the community. All their laptops come with Pop! os preinstalled
They do have Linux foundation Europe, which has a hq in Brussels. Afaik, all of the Europe OS projects supported by LFE are hosted in Europe also. They also claim to be independent; though I’m not sure if that means from LF entirely. Checking the job boards show roles in California and Germany however; suggesting they are the same entity. (Though I suppose that could just be collaborative?).
The very nature of open source means someone else could just pick it up even if the entirety of LF were wiped out. (There are 5000+ collaborators on the Linux kernel git repo) But the reality is a large portion of those actively working on the kernel, are likely involved in LF in some capacity. Add the fact that LF fund multiple Open source projects, The impact of losing LF would be drastic for the future development of not just Linux, But the FOSS ecosystem as a whole.
This isn’t the only threat to FOSS either; The fact that GitHub is owned by Microsoft is a concern imo.
javiwhite@feddit.ukto World News@lemmy.world•Ultra-processed food increases risk of early death, international study findsEnglish6·1 month agoIt seems cheese just missed the mark for ultra status according to this specification I found on webMD.
a quick summarisation is that there are 4 groups:
- Unprocessed or minimally processed foods (berries, nuts etc).
- Processed culinary ingredients (oils, butter, sugars etc).
- Processed foods (cheese, bread. Stuff with 2+ ingredients).
- Ultra-processed food and drink products (preservatives, additives, all the bad -ives).
So I’m guessing a hot dog would be ultra processed due to preservatives and additives often found in the ‘meat’.
That was an interesting rabbit hole to go down. Feels as though what is considered ultra-processed by the experts, is what us laymen tend to refer to as processed foods. I suppose technically their terminology is correct (the best kind of correct ofc), but it just feels like an exaggeration due to everyday usage of the term being what it is.
Edit: formatting.
Chicken: “woah, too soon bro”.
One without a hole is a doughnut. One with is a doughnut ring.

javiwhite@feddit.ukto Enough Musk Spam@lemmy.world•Tesla charger decoration in LondonEnglish0·2 months agoYeah that’s more of a french thing. Us Brits will continue to use tongue in cheek references rather than directly addressing the issue with force. We want a rebellion, just not an uncouth rebellion.
In the UK these are called doughnuts.
The presence of a hole isnt a pre-requisite to being deemed a doughnut here.
Calling something that has zero holes a ‘donut hole’, will absolutely have a local refer to you as a doughnut tho…
Would be far more viable had the Australian press not also been shot.
You’d think the microphone and news camera crew would give away the fact that they’re press, but I guess not. The PRESS identification is generally seen worn by war correspondents, rather than standadd press (they use lanyards moreso than flak jackets).
That being said; there is definitely an argument to be made that the US should be receiving war correspondents rather than standard journalists; and journalists being shot on camera definitely strengthens that argument.
