very hard graph to follow but “popular music” means highest rated radio pop station. Nothing alternative.
Don’t understand graph. is dark line what people think of songs released 11 years ago? WTH is graph before age 0? Oh ok, maybe. A song released when you were 40 is rated the same as one released 45-80 years earlier.
There is huge bias in “popular music” category. Can get very sick of old songs, or just stop listening to contemporary pop after a while. I’m surprised old people would still like pop songs of their youth, after being overplayed over the years.

Climate@slrpnk.net•Germany’s climate U-turn is the worst possible response to the oil shock | Prices at the pump have leapt since the start of the conflict – but clinging to fossil fuels will only prolong the pain2·1 month agoLong-term the only available and viable solution is making electric vehicles more attractive (by subsidizing them, the electricity to operate them and/or punishing the purchase of ICE cars).
Carbon tax and dividend is best/only policy not subject to political BS. $300/ton is right tax level (75c/liter gasoline). In US, that would be enough to pay each citizen/resident $4000/year with unchanged behaviour. EVs are better TCO even at $1/liter gasoline. Government/polticians doesn’t need to be involved in marketing “science benefits”, and carbon tax and dividend costs 0. Let private sector convince people how to save money with a better type of car, or let people use transit/cycling or live closer to where they need to go to. You effectively do punish behaviour that needlessly wastes fuel.
EV subsidies incentivizes car purchases not car use. If a used gas guzzler is cheap because it is uneconomical for most people, someone who needs it for 10 miles/week of school drop off and groceries gets a cheap car that pays for minimal climate destruction it contributes to. West has tried EV incentives before. Political BS of giving incumbents $$$Bs, while establishment funds disinformation to protest against the subsidies and disruption of establishment. Human sustainability gets massive disinformation budget to condemn it.

While only path to prevent global warming is carbon tax and dividend, giving people more money during shortages is better policy than subsidies. If it is calculated that average person will face $100 in extra costs due to fuel prices, giving $50 in payroll tax cuts, and $50 cash to everyone is path to compensating both employees forced to get to work, and all people. Whether EVs or bicycles or transit or just paying more for gas for their cars, people are empowered towards solutions that maximize their welfare.

0·2 months agoHe declared victory after first couple of days. Can claim nuclear program and infrastructure is 20 years from rebuilding. navy, air force, blah blah. SoH is world’s problem, and they better send their tankers to USA for generous USA extortion of the situation… so “double win”. Not even counting the diversion from Israel genocide of Lebannon.
That Dems not praise the victory is still a better political outcome, than $150-$300 oil, and destruction of GCC desalination and production capacity, with likely regime changes there. US just leaving will still brings GCC closer to Iran/China, but regime change moves them against Israel sooner.

Solarpunk@slrpnk.net•A new liquid battery stores solar heat for weeks
2·2 months agoThere is 0 practical use for this tech. Solar PV is cheaper than the panels required for this, with plumbing, and gain 100x-125x the energy per hour. LFP batteries could power a heat pump with 10x the storage/liter heat delivered. The molecule is not commercially produced yet, and energy extraction is far more complex than electricity from a battery.

Solarpunk@slrpnk.net•A new liquid battery stores solar heat for weeks
2·2 months agostorage per liter is only about 80% more than water at 60C differential (useful for hydronic floor heating), but per square meter of panel in sun only gains 2wh/hour, whereas water could gain close to 1000wh/hour. A bit complex to extract the heat as well.
salinity changes, not temperature
temperature melt driven salinity changes.
how much heat AMOC carries from the equator to northern europe, and also try to see how much air it’s heating in the atmosphere.
the physics experiment should include heat in oceans trapped below surface. The different heat flow from 35C Florida oceans in October vs what used to be 28C even at slower flow rate. How a 2 delta melt rate one season could reduce the melt rate next season, how Greenland melt into 10C water instead of 2C water would increase the southward flow rate that increases/maintains the north flow. Salinity normalizes within 3 months. Early summer melt will be low at low winter freeze rates, by theory increasing Carribean north flow, late summer south flow will be warmer.
Observations since 2016 data paper have been the opposite warming of Europe in winter.
Even if current weakens it won’t make Europe cold. Main effect will be extreme hot subtropical ocean and stronger hurricanes in Caribbean and south US. Those hotter sea levels will still distribute heat along the main current path. But Europe will get warmer because Atlantic gets warmer without current. Hot water spreads naturally, and hot air temperatures make water warmer. Continuous dropping of Artic ice levels, especially the winter maximums, means very long summer warming periods and very high fall arctic ocean temps, means steady ocean temperatures at UK level.
AMOC collapse theory is based on accelerated Artic melting. But what’s happening so far, last decade or so, is less freezing happening each year. At the time the theory was developed, global warming was led by Arctic region, warming 3-4x faster than rest of planet. Rest of planet has caught up without maintaining that ratio.

Fast charging is a big deal for Canadian distance driving. Also, viable EV manufacturing in Canada needs Chinese (BYD or CATL) partners, and advanced charging overcomes major hurdles for best EVs/batteries.
