I wish they would. It might mean fewer fire alarms tripped by vapes. (I work in a college library and it’s not funny have to evacuate the building just because someone decided to vape in a study room.)
I’m a systems librarian in an academic library. I moved over the Lemmy after Rexxit 2023. I’ve had an account on sdf.org since 2009 (under a different username), and so I chose this instance out of a sense of nostalgia. I do all sorts of fiber arts (knitting, cross stitch, sewing) and love dogs.

Walk someone else through editing a config file on the command-line over screenshare? Nano. Omg nano is your friend.
The problem with using nano for years is that I now try using nano shortcuts in other programs. Random new windows opening is confusing, until you figure out Ctrl+o isn’t save in that program. Then it’s just annoying because you still have your inappropriate muscle memory.
You can also ask a librarian for help. We like finding things and might be able to get a copy through interlibrary loan or other connections. We also like girl scout cookies, especially the ones with coconut.
About 18x8 inches. Not to worry, I have a classroom-sized whiteboard as a backup.
If she has trouble remembering if she’s taken the meds, I highly recommend TimerCaps. They are a pill bottle lid that tells you how long it’s been since the bottle was opened.
We have several at my house-- I can check and see if my partner has drugged the dog or if I’ve taken my ADHD meds. My partner can also see if I’ve taken my meds.
I have a whiteboard on my desk. It’s the only effective “to do” list I’ve found, for me. It’s covered in chicken scratching. I erase stuff as I do them.
Can confirm: am allergic to latex and use LaTeX. Benadryl and barrier cream are my friends.
Yeah, most of that just came out of left field and was entirely unrelated to anything he’d said before. At first I was like “wait, did they lemmy-stalk me and figure out my dad died of covid and my partner’s in a polyamorous relationship with a woman?” but no, it was entirely unrelated to anything.
Just… I’m glad all that’s off his chest, but I fear that’s only because he’s using it as a bludgeoning weapon.
(please read literally–no judgement intended) From one medicated, therapied autist to another: You might want to bring up these emotions with your therapist. You seem to be taking calling Republicans “weird” personally, and I know my therapist would be interested if I were having a similar reaction. My therapist would be all “ok, let’s look at the emotions wheel and figure out what you’re feeling, then we can talk about why”. Talking with your professional about this might help you weather the current political season in a more healthy way.
I’ve literally sent my therapist a Discord thread conversation that haunted me. My therapist was able to help dissect the interaction and I have a better understanding of which of my metaphorical buttons were pressed, so I’m more able to deal with similar situations in the future.
Thinking you’re a bad person is not the same as calling you a bad person. Laying out evidence which may lead someone to think you are a bad person is not the same as calling you a bad person.
I’ve not heard of that around here. The public library I worked at was chill about everyone visiting, including several people I’d consider “problems”: dude that always sat next to the teen section and complained the teens were loud while being louder than any teen, and other dude that would sit in the middle of a row of public computers and turn off the ones on either side because she didn’t want to sit next to anyone else.
The only time we kicked anyone out was when someone was vaping. The only time someone got banned was when they were racist in response to being told they couldn’t vape in the library.
ETA: “around here” is suburban New England
MS-DOS 5 or 6. I guess technically I used whatever Apple IIes had, first, but really I just loaded games from disk.
Come on, I’m counting on you!
Even freshwater tropical fish can be a PITA.
I finally found a job that I enjoy and isn’t wicked stressful. I’m looking forward to going in on Monday to fix a bug that reared its head over the weekend. It’s lovely.
My previous job had little downtime, lots of deadlines, and paid more. I took mental health days a lot.
Current job pays 2/3 as much and I love it. I don’t call out nearly as often.
I’m also a fan of canned green beans, but only the french sliced ones. I think that helps with the stringiness you can sometimes get. Oh! Creamed corn is also a lovely comfort food for me.
Whole chickpeas do have a disagreeable texture. Black beans and edamame don’t squick me the same way, so maybe give them a try if you haven’t already?
Me “not eating pork” is already a political statement to my mom’s side of the family and has been for a at least a decade. A government body recommending less beef? The horror!
They’re not as good at preventing STDs, but they’re decent at preventing pregnancy.
