  • I get that the author is being snarky, but on the whole I don’t necessarily disagree with the author of the piece he’s critical of, that much of the design of all new cars– not just EVs– can be user hostile. There’s a lot of design choices present that seem to be different for different sake. “Fixing” problems that didn’t need fixing.

The complaint about changing being locked behind apps is also extremely valid.

We’re all EV fans here, but let’s not waive away valid criticism.

  • I agree with others here when they say that age-verification laws aren’t about children at all, and identification isn’t a side effect, it’s the raison d’être.

But if I were to earnestly try to solve the problem, I might look to the physical (non-online) world. In every part of the world I’ve been to, buying alcohol requires one thing; to be of age. So if you very clearly look of age, you are allowed to buy it. If you look younger, you may be asked to provide ID proving you are old enough. While some vendors may take additional precautions such as scanning your ID, it is not a requirement and most do not. They simply look at your ID to verify, then allow the purchase.

One could buy a physical verification token, like one might buy a gift card currently, and the purchase requires the same verification as buying alcohol. Imagine you buy a plastic gift-card-like item branded Roblox and they verify you are of age, when you sign up for Roblox you enter in the details of the gift-card-like item. You are verified to be of age, and no-one has any other details.

  • I’d look at retired business machine, preferably something small like Lenovo or Dell SFF office pc, with 8th gen i3 at minimum. 8th gen is where the integrated gpu shines for this purpose. Install plex or Jellyfin. And if possible, stick to internal drives instead of external; one fewer thing to draw extra power. You could even do a second drive internally for backup.

  • One thing you might consider is skipping buying the Blu-ray player and obtaining your movie rips alternatively. Only you know your appetite for risk, but so long as you’re only getting copies of the movies you own, I’d guess the risk is small. Besides, simply ripping your physical discs isn’t strictly legal everywhere, so that itself may have a small risk.

Put the money you save into a better machine.
